Starting from the principles of gene regulation and regulation of enzyme activity, the topics of this book cover function, structure, and integral construction of signalling pathways plus a detailed description of the various types of carriers such as second messengers, protein kinases, and transmembrane receptors. Central cellular processes like cell cycle regulation, oncogenesis, and apoptosis are discussed in light of the properties of the signalling molecules involved. The author relates the observed biological phenomena to the underlying biochemical processes.

Meet the Author

Gerhard Krauss is Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Bayreuth (Germany). His resarch is centered on the mechanism of interaction of DNA binding proteins and their target DNA. He is specifically interested in transcription factor, DNA methyl transferases and nucleotide excision repair.
The idea for a textbook on Signal Transduction and Gene Regulation originated from a lecture course that he has been teaching at Bayreuth since the middle of the 1990s.

    Straight to the Point

    This text offers general and specific information on cell signaling without all the hand-holding and over-explanations of many higher education texts. The book is straight to the point, offering up to date research and developments, without all the heavy over-wording usually associated with this topic. If the reader wants an over-explanation, this is not the book for you. This text assumes that the reader already has a minimal biological background, and expands on that background to introduce the subject matter. Don't read this book if you want pretty cartoons of cell receptors and proteins either, because you won't find them here, just plain diagrams illustrating exactly what the author is referring to. All in all, a useful guide and reference tool, very helpful for intelligent readers of the subject who want a clear, detailed explanation.
