Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - RevaBeth Russell
I had always thought that biofeedback was some kind of phony treatment where you were hooked to wires and tried to get a line on some kind of electric graph to go down or up, thereby treating your untreatable pain—until I read this book. There are many kinds of biofeedback. It is simply defined as a technique that measures bodily functions. Using a thermometer is a kind of biofeedback because you get a biological reading that you then feed into your mind. The book is filled with interesting factoids and illustrations that enable a quick mastery of the subject. There is an immense variety and different types of biofeedback that can be used on an equally amazing number of mental and physical aliments. Mayo Clinic lists about 150 conditions that can be treated in non-invasive and non-medicated ways. For those who might be considering biofeedback treatment, this book is a valuable source of knowledge. At the University of Texas at Austin at the Counseling and Mental Health Center, college students can try leather recliners and touch-screen computers that aid the students in exercises for relaxation. I think every faculty room needs one of these. This is an excellent book in middle and high school libraries, as well career centers because of the wealth of information about possible careers in the field. As a science teacher, I was very impressed with how scientific research was explained and why controls are important in scientific research. Every science core in the nation includes the importance of the scientific method. This book has a story explaining it in real life and I am glad I have this book in my classroom. This nineteen-volume “Grey Matter” set provides a thorough examination of the anatomy and physiology of the brain. Readable slim volumes are filled with factual information, attractive charts, and illustrations to enhance the text. The glossary and index features allow for curriculum-based research. At the end of each artfully prepared chapter, there are suggestions for further subject investigation on the Internet. The Teen Brain defines adolescence in medical and social terms. One chapter on the reward circuit and thrill-seeking addresses decision-making processes that develop during adolescence. The impact of hormones and sleep cycles are expertly explained in chapters of their own. Biofeedback highlights the uses of this treatment for physical and mental conditions. Brain-wave instruments are explored, studies are noted, and careers in the field are identified. This set is highly recommended for curriculum support for middle school and high school students who will easily absorb the material presented in these excellent resources. Series titles include Biofeedback, Brain Development, Brain Disorders, New Techniques for Examining the Brain, and Pain, Sensation, and Perception among many others. Reviewer: Nancy Zachary
