Casting a wide net, this volume provides personal and professional information on some 445 American and Canadian naturalists and environmentalists, who lived from the late 15th century to the late 20th century. It includes explorers who published works on the natural history of North America, conservationists, ecologists, environmentalists, wildlife management specialists, park planners, national park administrators, zoologists, botanists, natural historians, geographers, geologists, academics, museum scientists and administrators, military personnel, travellers, government officials, political figures and writers and artists concerned with the environment. Some of the subjects are well known. The accomplishments of others are little known.

Each entry contains a succinct but careful evaluation of the subject's career and contributions. Entries also include up-to-date bibliographies and information concerning manuscript sources.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This comprehensive encyclopedia provides personal and professional background on 444 American and Canadian naturalists, explorers, conservationists, ecologists, environmentalists, scientists, writers, and artists from the late 19th century through the present. The editors are professional historians and professors who have placed each subject within the framework of the evolution of environmental science, from early exploration to current government regulation. Concise, clear, and unbiased, the entries average two pages and very clearly outline biographical information, professional and career accomplishments, and major contributions. The entries can be used by reasders of all ages. For each entry, a bibliography of both published and unpublished sources is included that could even be used for advanced research. A useful appendix lists all entrants by category (e.g., botanists, educators, topographers), and an additional bibliography lists many more collective biographies and serials. There are no comparable reference books on this topic that have the scope of this dictionary. Worth every penny, it is one of the best reference books of the year despite being unillustrated. Highly recommended for most public and academic libraries.-Laura Lipton, Univ. of Washington Lib., Seattle
Booknews
Compiled by four editors and 133 other contributors, this volume chronicles 445 well-known and obscure shapers of ecological thinking in both countries from the colonial period i.e. the late 1400s through July 1996. A pending volume on Mexico will complete coverage of the Western hemisphere from this perspective. Entries encapsulate the subject's family, educational, and professional background, major contributions, and a bibliography. Appended data include: dates of birth and death, national origin, educational background, and grouping by occupation or avocation. Entomologist, ornithologist, and artist John Abbott 1751-1840 is the initial entry. The distinction between naturalist and environmentalist is undefined.
