Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Coverage in this collective biography includes presidents (Buchanan, Lincoln, Johnson), members of Congress, state governors, cabinet officers, Supreme Court justices, writers, editors, and abolitionists. Military leaders "were selected for specific contributions to the Union cause" and include division commanders and above. There are entries for 872 individuals, but the inclusion of all members of Congress prevents this collection from being a carefully selected compilation; their entries take up space that contributors could have put to better use. The editors state in their introduction that they have included "some individuals whose obscurity is breathtaking. The contributors to this new collective biography are professional historians affiliated with universities. They were requested by the editors to stress a leader's activities during the war years and "to offer an assessment of the individual's place in the Union." Entries do not always evaluate a person's importance to the Union, and a reading of dozens of entries does not indicate how these individuals, taken as a whole, represent the idea of national unity. While entries are signed, the list of contributors does not include references to entries written by them. Each entry includes, on average, the titles of one to three books suggested for further reading; complete citations are found in a 34-page bibliography. There are few citations to the journal literature, and important primary source materials are not included. For example, the complete writings of Buchanan, Lincoln, George Templeton Strong, Charles Francis Adams, etc. are not listed. The book has a good name/subject index Ezra Warner's "Generals in Blue" (Louisiana State Univ., 1964) offers illustrations, specific citations to the literature, and selected coverage of a group of Union leaders. Mark E. Neely's "Abraham Lincoln Encyclopedia" (McGraw-Hill, 1982), complemented by the older "Lincoln Encyclopedia (Macmillan, 1950) by Archer Shaw, provides laypersons an excellent introduction to the entire period. However, coverage of military leaders and politicians is quite selective In essence, this new collective biography contains information easily located in other standard reference works. Limiting selection to the truly important Union supporters would have allowed contributors space for more interpretive entries. Recommended only for those libraries wishing to purchase everything written on the Civil War.
Booknews
An alphabetical reference with entries on 872 individuals associated with the Union cause in the Civil War. The entries center on those men and women who influenced the course of public policy, opinion, and events. The list is comprehensive for political leaders (presidents, congressmen, senators, governors, cabinet officials, Supreme Court justices) and selective for others (e.g., foreign service officials, editors, photographers, abolitionists). Military leaders are selected for specific contributions to the Union cause, and include most of those who were at least division commanders. Annotation c.
