Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
'This book is written with the cancer patient and their families in mind. It is also useful for the trainee oncologist and allied professionals. This book provides explanations of cancer treatments and biology to interested parties, describes advances in understanding of cells, genes and molecular biology.? (Oncology News, Fall 2009)

"This book is extremely well written and provides an excellent resource for healthcare providers tasked with educating patients and families about cancer and its treatment." (Doody's Reviews, March 2009)

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Theresa M. Bacon, MSN (University of New Mexico Hospital)
Description: This book describes the genetic and environmental causes of cancer and the multifaceted approach to treatment of the disease.
Purpose: According to the authors, this book is intended for patients and families without specialized knowledge of cancer and its treatment. This information is invaluable to families, but the reading level is above the level recommended for patient and family education. Much of the material may need to be interpreted for patients and families by the healthcare provider.
Audience: Because the reading level exceeds that recommended for patient and family education, the book is better suited for use as a reference by healthcare professionals providing direct care. It is well written by authorities in this area.
Features: The multiple factors influencing the biology of cancer and the complexities of treatments developed to target these factors are covered. Well written case studies illustrate major points. It is difficult to differentiate details in the black-and-white figures, but many are also reproduced in color in a center section, which adds significantly to the book.
Assessment: This book is extremely well written and provides an excellent resource for healthcare providers tasked with educating patients and families about cancer and its treatment.
