Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Cathi I. White
Cancer does not just happen to a person. There are various stages of development that occur before a person is considered to have cancer. Even if someone has cancerous tumors in their body, they may never experience full-blown cancer. There are two types of tumors: benign and malignant. Benign tumors are non-life threatening. Malignant tumors are life threatening and usually result in surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a combination of two or more of these treatments. In order for tumors to grow, they have to have nutrients, oxygen, and a blood supply. Blocking the supply of blood can stop the tumors from growing. Even though chemotherapy, radiation, and medicine have helped, scientists are constantly researching new ways to stop cancerous growth. The growth of cancer and what stage it is in is determined by the size of the tumor, the margins around the tumor, and the differentiation (organization and function of the cells). Tumors are categorized by stages from 0 to IV, with the last stage being the most dangerous. This informative book also discusses other topics such as how to diagnose cancer, metastasis, treatment, and cures. The pictures in the book are captivating, giving the reader a close view of what cancer looks like inside of a human body. This educational book would be excellent in a science, health, or nursing classroom. Part of the "Biology of Cancer" series. Reviewer: Cathi I. White
