Description: This second edition is devoted to the evaluation and treatment of common foot and ankle disorders, based on a sound understanding of the biomechanics of the foot and ankle. This new edition includes updated information related to closed kinetic chain biomechanics and kinetic chain rehabilitation principles.
Purpose: This book attempts to prepare the physical therapy clinician In the area of foot and ankle biomechanics and orthotic therapy. It includes thorough descriptions of both normal and abnormal biomechanics of the foot and ankle; it also includes techniques for orthotic fabrication and prescription.
Audience: Practicing clinicians in the fields of physical therapy and athletic training are the targeted audiences for this book. It is also recommended for physical therapy students; however the narrow scope of this text makes it better suited as a reference textbook rather than a course textbook for the student. Physician assistants may also find this text useful as a clinical reference for the evaluation of patients with foot/ankle disorders.
Features: The chapters devoted specifically to biomechanics, pathomechanics, and treatment strategies are especially useful. This includes a very thorough description of a comprehensive biomechanical evaluation, the techniques related to orthotic fabrication, and suggestions for orthotic prescription. The text also includes a chapter devoted to the diabetic foot and a chapter devoted to surgical interventions; both chapters are very helpful for descriptions and references. Finally, two new chapters include descriptions of closed chain biomechanics and kinetic chain rehabilitation techniques.
Assessment: This is a well organized textbook devoted to the understanding of foot and ankle biomechanics and the unique strategies of orthotic management for foot and ankle disorders. Use of the terms "closed chain" and "kinetic chain" in two chapters appears to be an attempt to update the first edition to meet the needs of the modern clinician. This textbook will be very useful for the clinician new to the area of foot and ankle biomechanics. It is a useful reference for students, but may not serve as a course textbook because of its narrow focus, which is an advantage for the clinician.
