Biotech Research

Overview

Scientific research is about questions and observations. It is the process of discovery; it strives for facts and conclusions unencumbered by bias, distortion, and political sensibilities. Although sometimes the methods and motivations are flawed, science attempts to develop a body of knowledge that can guide decision makers, enhance daily life, and lay d foundation for future generations. Although sometimes the methods and motivations are flawed, science attempts to develop a body of knowledge that can guide decision makers, enhance daily life, and lay d foundation for future generations. The Inside Science series provides students with a sense of the painstaking work of scientific research-whether it involves microscopic cells cultured in a lab or identifying planets far beyond the solar system. It examines how scientists work and where that work leads them. Through clear and vivid narrative, carefully selected anecdotes, and direct quotes each book in the series reinforces the role of scientific research in furthering learning and creating a more livable world.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Marilyn Brien
The Inside Science series provides glimpses of scientific research in various areas and helps students develop an understanding of scientific research. While these two volumes focus on biotechnology and infectious disease, other volumes in the series focus on climate, space, renewable energy, and vaccines. The lively narrative style, filled with anecdotes, presents dynamic stories that will hold a student’s interest. A chronology of important events illustrates milestones in research, from the seventeenth-century discovery of microbes to the 2011 development of the antibiotic Fidaxomicin in Infectious Disease Research, while the 1953 discovery of DNA to the 2010 creation of the first synthetic organism bookend the chronology for Biotech Research. Both books conclude with thoughts about future impacts of research that include spider silk from goat’s milk, laboratory-created steaks, and new vaccines. Infectious Disease includes research on sleeping sickness and Guinea worm disease, as well as more familiar diseases. Biotech Research presents successes in food production, medicine, and industry. The episode of DNA, the “big bang” of biotech research, is especially well written. These two volumes are “must haves” for all levels of youth, even if you have extensive resources for the sciences. (Inside Science) Ages 11 to 18.
School Library Journal
Gr 6–10—An overview of genetics for beginners, including the discovery of DNA by Crick and Watson, leads readers into the contemporary world of biotechnology, a world enhanced by the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003. Orbiting contemporary issues such as recombinant DNA, stem cell and gene therapies, the production of biofuels, bioremediation, and the creation of biodegradable plastics, the authors address current issues and events and explain how they impact agriculture, medicine, industry, and the environment. The writing style is extremely clear and direct. This book is on a par with Alvin Silverstein, Virginia Silverstein, and Laura Silverstein Nunn's DNA (21st Century Bks, 2002), William Sofer's Introduction to Genetic Engineering (Butterworth-Heinemann, 1991), and Susan Aldridge's The Thread of Life: The Story of Genes and Genetic Engineering (Cambridge Univ., 1996). Matching their intensity, effective informational clarity, and level of excitement generated relative to the rapidly developing field, Biotech Research has the distinct advantage of being an up-to-date and timely addition to any collection. The inclusion of oleophilic (oil-eating) bacteria first developed by microbiologist Ananda Chakrabarty in 1981 and later modified by scientists in conjunction with the BP oil spill of 2010 clenches the realization that biotechnology is highly applicable to the real world. A mix of photos and occasional graphic illustrations complements the text.—Kathryn Diman, Bass Harbor Memorial Library, Bernard, ME
