Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Over seven million Americans have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which impacts the emotional, mental, and physical health of sufferers and their family and friends. In this welcome addition to the existing resource material, Burgess, a noted bipolar authority with a practice in Los Angeles, writes in a style reminiscent of having a chat with one's family doctor. His text provides a wealth of current information pertaining to the disorder, from causes and selecting a doctor to treatment and prevention. Both medical treatments and psychotherapy are covered, as are social issues like careers, healthy relationships, and coping tactics for friends and family. The last chapter explores available resources, and well thought-out appendixes complete the book. Both comprehensive and easily understood, this resource is an essential part of every public library collection; it will most certainly become one of the most sought-after publications on bipolar disorder.-Melody Ballard, Washoe Cty. Bipolar Handbook: Real-Life Questions with up-to-Date Answers

I've read all the latest books and The Bipolar Handbook is best. It has all the medical information about what causes bipolar disorder, what medical alternatives are available and why they work or don't work. It covers whether you will pass on bipolar disorder to your children. It also covers psychotherapy and how to change your life to reduce your bipolar symptoms. Unlike the others, it covers stress-reduction techniques, meditation and alternative treatment as well. None of the other books do all this. The author of The Bipolar Handbook also takes the time to share techniques and strategies he's collected to make your personal life go well and how to get others to like and respect you. I like the tone, which is very warm and friendly. I bought copies for my friends and family so they can understand what being bipolar is all about and know how to relate to me better. Everyone I have shown this book to has liked it.

    Written in English!!!

Finally - a book about a medical condition in language that I could actually understand! This whole book was written in conversation style, in easy flowing question & answer format. The nice thing: all of the questions posed were the questions I was asking, too! I felt like this book was written for me. Everything from medications, to effect on relationships, to symptoms of the diagnosis...this book covers it all 'and then some!'. This is a book that I want to buy for everybody I know who needs to understand the ins and outs of this illness. If there's any bood you're going to read - make it this one!

Bipolar Handbook: Real-Life Questions with up-to-Date Answers

My girlfriend has bipolar disorder and she bought me The Bipolar Handbook. Finally I understand what she is going through. This book has saved our relationship and I really have some respect for her, now. I don't really care about all the medicines and medical stuff that I probably wouldn't understand, anyway. I just wanted somebody to explain what I needed to know to communicate with my bipolar girlfriend and not fight all the time. Now I know what I can do to support her and what I had better leave to her and her doctor. Now I know what to watch for to avoid upsetting her and I know how to recognize and head off an emergency about to happen. This is a big relief to me and to her, too. Thanks a lot for the Bipolar Handbook.

If you have bipolar or a friend/loved one who does read this book!

I bought this book as a book my therapist recomended to me. It is a really good book at answering all your questions and explaining just what is going on when you have bipolar. It gives great advice on how to handle different situations you might encounter and its a very easy and quick read. It has really helped me out with techniques to help with stress and medical explainations as to what goes on. I highly recomend reading this book!

    I have found some hope

I was wondering if my son had Bipolar Disorder so I read the Bipolar Handbook. Then I gave it to my son to read. Without any fights we both agreed he had it. I thought it would be disappointing but he is actually relieved that he is finally getting some help. By the way, he took Dr. Burgess advice to find the best doctor and we took the book to the first appointment so we would know what to say and ask him. Finally I feel like I have some hope.

A Down to Earth Expert Speaks

Wes Burgess' "Bipolar Handbook" contains no-nonsense information on dealing with bipolar disorder, your own or others. No fads or airy theories, just solid knowledge. Questions and answers gleaned from Dr. Burgess' patients and their loved ones. Highly recommended; I'd give it six stars if I could. CWH.
