Bird Feathers: A Guide to North American Speciesby S. David Scott, Casey McFarland
• Over 400 photos of representative feathers from 379 species • How to identify not only what bird a feather came from but also what kind of feather it is • Range maps and wing type given for each bird This guide teaches birders to use the characteristics of wing types and feather morphology to identify feathers--not only by species but also by their place on the bird's body. The introductory chapters give a detailed overview of the feather--how feathers developed, the parts of a single feather, and the variety of types of feathers on a bird. In the feather identification section, more than 400 color photographs show feather samples from 379 bird species from all over North America. Along with the wing type of the species and a map showing its range, several types of feathers are included for each bird; each feather is labeled with its type and its size.

Made a very interesting refernce book to my 'library'. I found the detailed descriptions and full color photo very useful in identifying feathers i had found on many of my nature hikes; some i had previously believed to be from one bird were actually another! my only issue is that some species feathers can be very similar and difficult to identify. overall the book is useful and easy to use.
In the first week after receiving I was able to id an inch long loon feather and another smaller one for an eastern screech owl. Amateur naturalists anywhere in North America will enjoy looking at the color pictures of the flight and body feathers of almost 400 birds. The fascinating detailed information in the initial chapters on feather history, types and how to use them for identification was presented with tons of color illustrations that draw you into the text. Makes learning and remembering the material much easier. Overall, excellent purchase for individuals and families.
