Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Bird nests are amazing in their variety and design and this early reader offers examples of a few. Nests are made with materials that a bird can easily obtain. The nest offers a place to lay eggs, keep them safe and also provide safety and shelter for the new baby chicks. An albatross which lives near water builds a nest of grass and mud. Adelie penguins usually don't have these materials available so they use pebbles to make a nest. Orioles are very creative; they weave nests that hang from a tree branch. Storks build nests of twigs and they add to it each year, so these nests can become quite large. Swallow hide under eaves or bridges and build their nests out of mud and owls love holes in trees. The variety is clearly show in excellent photographs that may fill a single page or a spread. At the end of the book there is a picture glossary that offers more information about each of the birds. The closing pages includes idea for parents and teachers, an index and web sites for kids to visit and learn more about bird nests. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
