Children's LiteratureThis is a great book about birds with much information, beautiful pictures, and nice coverage across the bird world. It has bold printed words that may be difficult or not regular vocabulary for most children. Everything is covered from "Pet Profiles" chapters about the different birds to a more personalized section with such things as "A Unique Friend," "Needs and Wants," "Birds Speak," and "Equipment." There are "Fun Facts" and "Important Dates." So, there are all kinds of information in nice segmented sections. One could learn a great deal about birds including finches, budgerigars, canaries, cockatiels and parakeets, and parrots. The pictures are great. There is a tremendous amount of factual material that is presented in an interesting way. Additional sections include "Words to Know," "Where to Learn More," and an index. The problem is that the format of the book lends itself to younger children and it might be missed by the upper elementary grades. With the help of a good library media specialist or teacher this problem will be solved. This book is part of the "Pet's Point of View" series. 2005, Compass Point Books, Ages 8 to 12.
