Gr 7 Up-Two straightforward titles that examine issues vital to teen sexuality. The first book touches on the reasons for using birth control; options, including abstinence, withdrawal, over-the-counter barrier methods, and prescription medicines; and how to get help in deciding which method will work best for the individual. A brief review of how conception and pregnancy occur is included as well as the pros and cons for each type of birth control. Dating and Sex considers what makes for a healthy dating relationship, how to develop relationship skills, when and how an individual or couple should make sexual decisions, and how to handle a breakup. Two sets of basic questions that will help readers decide if they are ready for a relationship and what their own personal boundaries will be within it are particularly helpful. Each section starts with a basic preview of information included and ends with interesting points to consider that are effective discussion starters. Both books address gay teens and incorporate their specific concerns into the main text without relegating the information to a separate chapter. Images of contemporary teens decorate the text but do little to reinforce or clarify the concepts introduced. The concise length prevents any topic from being explained in great detail, but despite this, readers will find the books accessible and informative.-Katie O'Dell, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
