Now, veteran New York Post columnist Joel Sherman tells the story of how the championship Yankees were constructed and vividly recaptures a 1996 season when a down-and-out manager named Joe Torre and the untested duo of Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera laid the ...

Overview

In the fall of 1955, the Yankees suffered a crushing playoff setback to the Seattle Mariners, ending their season and Buck Showalter's tenure as manager. Now, veteran New York Post columnist Joel Sherman tells the story of how the championship Yankees were constructed and vividly recaptures a 1996 season when a down-and-out manager named Joe Torre and the untested duo of Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera laid the groundwork for greatness. No writer has spent more time with the Yankees in the past 18 seasons than Sherman, and from his years of on-the-spot reporting and hundreds of new interviews, he delivers the inside story on how the Bronx Bombers journeyed from the depths of despair to the Canyon of Heroes.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
A few Yankee loyalists might quibble that the title should be Rebirth of a Dynasty, but nobody will dispute that Joe Sherman captures the excitement and prowess of the 1996 Bronx Bomber triumph. As every faithful New York fan knows, their World Series victory that year began a skein of four world championships in five seasons. And who better to tell the story of Joe Torre, Derek Jeter, and Mariano Rivera than Sherman, a locker-room mainstay and veteran New York Post sports columnist? Expert insights; plenty of interviews: A winning combination.
From the Publisher

"Full of rich, detailed reporting ... One doesn't have to be a Yankees fan to enjoy this book, but a fan of baseball and good writing." --John Feinstein, author of A Season on the Brink

"In rich detail, Joel Sherman examines the architecture of a modern dynasty: the art, the science, and yes, sometimes the amazing luck. The '96 Yankees, rife with characters and comebacks, provide fertile ground for Sherman's sharp reportorial skills."--Tom Verducci, Sports Illustrated

"Sherman's fly-on-the-wall familiarity with his subject results in countless revelations, many of which will surprise even hard-core Yankees fans."--Chad Finn, Boston Globe

"A superb account of the making of a champion, with inside info about Joe Torre, Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, and many behind-the-scenes players. It's the type of info you don't see in most baseball books."--Jon Heyman, Newsday.com

Good for Fans, But Terribly Written

I'm a huge Yankee fan so I enjoyed the opportunity to remember the events of their first championship season in nearly two decades, but Sherman desperately needs an editor. The book completely lacks structure, with tangent building on tangent to form an incoherent mess. There are diamonds in the rough in the form of interesting revelations, but getting to them can be hard work indeed.

    A great refresher

For those of us that were only about 10 or 11 during the 1996 season and don't remember every single player on our favorite team, this book not only serves as a reminder but also explains how the team was put together. The 96 season really was a season of chance and a little bit of luck. Sherman did a great job showing how everything really was pieced together to not only form the 96 champion team but the other 3 teams that followed. Very well written, hard to put down and reminds you why it's so great to be a Yankee fan.
