Overview

In this prequel to The Heart of an Assassin, you will enter the world of Theo Gresco on a journey that led him into a life of crime and betrayal. His youth was stolen, his trust eroded and his destiny predicted a path of vengeance.
The Birth of an Assassin follows the life of a young man whose personal tragedies transform him from a carefree innocent boy into a cold hearted and deadly assassin. Also during this era, the rise of the Giordano and Costellino crime families is also followed.
The Heart of an Assassin tells the story of a man hired to take out the head of an organization and how a single solitary act propelled a crime family into becoming one of the most influential and innovative crime families to exist. The Birth of an Assassin brings the reader to the beginning. It delves into the life and mind of a person who can kill without regard or feeling for his intended victims or for the people that hire him.
Once again, the author captures the intensity in the life of an assassin challenging the reader's fleeting thought to put down this book.

Only takes one moment to transform an individual, but Theo Gresco, the protagonist has been front and center in many of these moments. A childhood in shambles and innocence lost, Gresco lost faith in trust itself, spiraling down the staircase of crime and betrayal--the only thing he knew. This premise of The Birth of an Assassin, by Antonio Bertot, is enticing and captivating, hooking the reader right from the get-go.

This book is the second in a trilogy, the third is being written now. I read the first one, The Heart of an Assassin, and found it to be a page turner. Then I finished it wanting more. Tony did just that with his prequel, The Birth of an Assassin. From the beginning with the introduction of all of the many characters, the story travels a path of suspense and excitement that kept me turning the page to read more.

When I read the first book by Tony Bertot, I was unable to put it down. The second book was even better. The characters, the plot and the continual "sitting on the edge of my seat" turned the pages over and over. He did an excellent job and I HIGHLY recommend his books. His non stop excitement is addicting, I hope he continues to write. It's a must read! The story line is one of the best I have read in a long time...go get the books!!

Reviewed by Maria Beltran for Readers' Favorite The Birth of an Assassin, a novel by Tony Bertot, is the story of how an innocent young boy grows up and ultimately becomes one of the most feared assassins in the USA. Sergio Gresco and his wife, Lucia, immigrated to the United States from Sicily in 1932, and opened a shop in Little Italy in Chicago. In 1942, the couple run a moderately successful business and get in trouble with the Italian mafia, who demands that they pay protection money. They have a young son, Theo, who roams around the neighborhood, clicking his camera at anyone who catches his fancy. The death of his father will transform Theo’s life and he will find himself in Sicily, at the age of 14, during the Second World War, with blood in his hands. He returns to America to seek revenge, but finds love instead. However, his violent past will catch up with him.      Tony Bertot’s The Birth of an Assassin is a story that happens during a violent time in the history of the world. From Italy to the United States of America, an Italian family is caught in the turmoil of the era when the Italian mafia is on the rise, the Second World War is a reality, and violence is a way of life. It chronicles the life of Theo from being an innocent child into becoming a cold-blooded assassin, due to circumstances out of his control. This novel is a prequel to the book, The Heart of an Assassin, and is part of the Assassin series. In a book full of doubts and deceptions, it is amazing how the author weaves together Theo’s story and the rise and fall of the Italian mafia families at that time. And it is a tribute to the author’s writing style that, as a reader, I find it easy to understand what drives this assassin to behave the way he does, in the merciless and violent world that he finds himself in.

It only takes one moment to transform an individual, but Theo Gresco, the protagonist has been front and center in many of these moments. A childhood in shambles and innocence lost, Gresco lost faith in trust itself, spiraling down the staircase of crime and betrayal-the only thing he knew. This premise of The Birth of an Assassin, by Antonio Bertot, is enticing and captivating, hooking the reader right from the get-go. As the novel revolves around the world of crime, the rise of the Giordano and Costellino crime families is well documented. The Birth of an Assassin is set against the backdrop of two major U.S. cities-Chicago and New York-in the early 1940s, and spans nearly two decades, from 1942 to 1964. The story opens up in Little Italy, Chicago, with eight-year-old Theo Gresco prancing through town with his most cherished possession, his camera. With little Theo's innocence intact, the neighborhood is not only ravaged by its own war, but suffering the effects of WWII as well. No one is secure as neighbors loot stores, and even steal from each other. These are desperate times. In order to protect themselves, Theo's father, Sergio, and other shop owners decide to hire an armed guard, Davino, for protection. Unknown to Davino, the woman he falls in love with is hired by the Sabrisio crime family to seduce him, and thus, seal his fate, along with the fates of the neighborhood shop owners. Sergio's murder results in Theo's loss of innocence, transforming him into what he soon becomes-a cold-blooded, revenge-seeking assassin. Before this transformation is complete, however, Theo and his mother, Lucia, go back to Italy to stay with Angelina Gresco, Lucia's mother-in-law. There, his mother is murdered, leaving Theo an orphan. As Angelina and Fernando, Theo's grandparents, and Theo flee toward a school for protection, Theo joins a shorthanded American battalion and kills for the first time. He also gets a taste of revenge for the first time, killing Herr Kaiser, the man who murdered his mother. Ultimately, the moment that captures Theo's rise to an assassin is when he has just slain Herr Kaiser. His grandmother takes the rifle out of his hand, and tries to hold him close and provide that maternal warmth that a nine-year-old should receive. During their embrace, he reaches out for the rifle and clutches it tightly, the compelling image of the assassin's realization-a metamorphosis complete. The Birth of an Assassin is at once poignant and powerful; it will keep readers riveted to the last page.
