Birth of Soul, Vol. 3

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Andrew Hamilton
This compilation presents a potent if scattershot look at the early years of the soul music revolution. There's little in the way of a common thread; everything from the Impressions' obscure "Shorty's Gotta Go" (recorded on Bandera Records) to Richard Berry & the Pharoahs' pulsating "Have Love Will Travel" is featured. With few exceptions (i.e., the Spinners' "That's What Girls Are Made For," Ike & Tina Turner's "It's Gonna Work Out Fine," and Wilson Pickett's "It's Too Late"), most of these tracks are hard to find on CD. Also included are Don Gardner & Dee Dee Ford's "I Need Your Loving," two from Garnet Mimms & the Enchanters, rarities from the Superbs, and other soulful expressions that will make this a strong addition to your collection.
