BIRTH OF THE VAMPIRE is not your ordinary vampire story. Haley Scott lives with her uncle in a small town where no one cares for her and she’s tricked into believing if she gives herself to a boy she likes, he’ll announce their relationship. At a party, her secret is cruelly revealed and she flees in shame and anger. Dorian Vanderlind is a vampire, visiting his relatives, when he’s invited to a party. He follows Haley and when she has a spectacular care crash, he turns her into a vampire. However, she’s not the normal type of fledgling he’s used to, but she keeps her independence and has a strong control over her thirst. BIRTH OF THE VAMPIRE is a fun novella with a good backstory on both of the main characters. I enjoyed how different BIRTH OF THE VAMPIRE is from traditional and YA vampire stories. The action doesn’t really take place until the last third of the book, but the buildup was worth it. Enjoy a new take on the vampire genre!

The book opens up in a way that leaves me wanting more and I have to go on - I started this book earlier today and I couldn't stop until it was finished. There are very well-developed characters who seem realistic both in nature and in their conversations, something I'm not finding enough of lately. Early on I made several predictions thinking I'd made how the whole book would play out but  - nope. It took a very different turn and I will not know if ANY of my predictions are correct as the end left me very much hanging. Very well written with good grammar and from a believable standard. The POV switches around a bit and it is done well with great continuity and  is very easy to follow.

A Fabulous New Twist on YA Vampires!

Do you believe in vampires? Do you believe in love? When a lonely teen who has lived a troubled life lay dying after a car wreck, a troubled vampire, intrigued by this girl makes the decision to save her by turning her. Haley has lived a sad life, with no one to trust or believe in, she is old beyond her years and catches the attention of the handsome Dorian Vanderlind when she asserts her theories on vampires and immortality. Both Haley and Dorian will discover that their new bond isn’t exactly what they imagined. For Haley, she discovers that vampires do exist and for Dorian, well, he is learning that NO ONE is prepared to be a maker to a teenager!

Gayla Twist’s Birth of the Vampire is her own special “twist” on YA paranormal fantasy. Light on the romance, as in non-existent between her two main characters, she has brilliantly allowed us into the minds and hearts of both Haley and Dorian as we see events unfold through their unique perspectives. The dialogue and attitudes of these two could not be more polar opposite and the humorous moments this causes just adds more flesh to this tale. Ms. Twist writes with a crisp voice and her POV changes are perfectly executed. Imagine, getting your dose of teen attitude in a vampire, now that’s realism in a fantasy world! As this series continues, it should be fascinating how these two deal with each other in the future!
