Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1
It's Mouse's birthday, and Mr. Panda is throwing a bash at his restaurant with many of the same animals first seen in Dinner at the Panda Palace (HarperCollins, 1995). Each guest gives Mouse a gift-described on one page in bouncy rhyme and revealed as readers turn the page and shout out the last word to complete the quatrain: "We love you so much,/We shopped all over town./You'll be a true princess/With this shiny gold . . . Crown!"). Her final present, from Panda, is her friend Snail "from far away," who completes the party and the story. Cushman's bright and cheery illustrations echo the lively rhymes. Children will especially enjoy the predictability of completing the verses. All in all, a fun party.

Kirkus Reviews
Mouse's birthday party is at The Panda Palace, and all her friends are attending, each bringing a special gift. Under Mr. Panda's direction, one hot elephant, two roaring lions, three pigs, three jumping monkeys, two tall giraffes, two laughing hyenas, a couple of honey-bear baseball all-stars and some singing chicks present Mouse with a rhyming guessing game for each gift. "For monkeys like us, / Bananas will please. / But for you, birthday mouse, / Here's a big chunk of . . . Cheese!" Rhyming clues and answers appear on alternating pages, allowing children to listen carefully and solve the riddle before turning the page to confirm their response with a full colorful cartoon drawing in signature Cushman style. Some riddles will be more obvious than others, as rhyming words are not as apparent. (Compare "own with xylophone" or "flight with kite.") Still, clues are evident enough and the combination of a popular theme and winning ending emphasizing a friendship's reunion in a jovial zoo-like setting will encourage repeated readings with gleeful shouts at the appropriate time. This is a great present for any child up to 8 having a birthday. Also, as a kindergarten teacher it's one I'm going to keep in my classroom. This author's DINNER AT THE PANDA PALACE has been a big hit year after year and I know this new book will keep my kids listening too. It's got rhyming riddles with turn-the-page answers. I love the book's friendship theme and the ending: 'At the Palace we know / How special you are / That's why on your birthday / You are the.... STAR!' Give a birthday child a hat with a gold star and watch that child shine. Great book!
