Editorial Reviews

New York Times Book Review
The birthday child looks very much like a hippopotamus. Her friends, the birthday monsters, arrive just after dawn, bring presents, make a wonderful mess and clean it up. Part of an appealing new board-book series. --New York Times Book Review, 3/13/94

Meet the Author

Sandra Boynton

Sandra Boynton is a popular American cartoonist, writer, and songwriter. Since 1974, Boynton has written and illustrated over forty children’s books and seven general audience books, including four New York Times bestsellers. More than 60 million of her books have been sold—“mostly to friends and family,” she says. She has also written and produced five albums of award-winning children’s music. Three of her albums have been certified Gold, and Philadelphia Chickens, nominated for a Grammy, has gone Platinum. She lives with her family on a farm in New England.

Biography

In the 1980s, it was hard to enter a gift shop without seeing Sandra Boynton's name. Her humorous pen-and-watercolor cartoons of hippos, ewes, and her famous turkeys (you know, symbolizing the human ones in life who can get you down) were emblazoned on cards, mugs, stickers, stationery...and of course, her wonderful, wacky books, the first of which was 1979's Hippos Go Berserk! .

Boynton began her career as a greeting card illustrator with aspirations of theater directing; but having a family changed her focus, and she began devoting herself full-time to art. Her board books, filled with goofy animal illustrations and rhyming verse, are toddler staples. But their appeal to adults is undeniable, and she has also written a number of humor books for the general public.

Given the rhythmic, buoyant style of her writing, it was only natural that Boynton would become involved in companion music to her books. From the '90s on, several of her titles included accompanying CDs, culminating in the 2002 release of Philadelphia Chickens, a CD-book extravaganza written with composer Michael Ford and featuring musical performances by several high-profile stars.

Who knows what lies ahead for this irrepressible force of nature? If there's one thing Sandra Boynton has proved in the course of her remarkably diverse career, it's that she's not lost her capacity to surprise us. (Thank heavens!)

My daughter received this board book for her first birthday. Reading this aloud as a family for each family member's birthday is our family tradition. Just finished our 18th year of reading

    Great Birthday Book

I got this book for my son's first birthday, and it was worth it. Even though it is a birthday book, I can not help but read it all the time. It is funny, and it has a good twist that you really do not see coming. It teaches that things are not always what they seem. I think it will be around for a very long time.

Great Book with a shakey start!

When we first started reading this book to our son on his first birthday, we became a little nervous. I think I even said, "This book is awful!" We kept reading andrealized Sandra Boynton did it again. She wrote a wonderful book w/ great rythmn. It is a fun read with a nice ending!

Great book for kids - or anyone!

My son adores pretty much all of Ms. Boynton's books, but is particularly enamored with this one. And, we love it too. It makes a great birthday gift - or a good book to read anytime :-)

    Not just for kids!

I gave a copy of this to both my boys on their birthdays. It's hiliarious! They love it when the monsters use his breakfast as confetti. This book makes a great gift for all ages. It's tradition to read it every year on birthdays for everyone in the family.
