Another murmur of high spirits erupted from the group of men clustered around the end of the table, and James' curious eyes found the source of the low, pleasant voice. Standing between two T-shirted, leather vested, ponytailed bikers was a tall, broad-shouldered, sandy-haired man dressed in denim and cowboy boots. Even from his seat at the bar, James could see the jeans, denim jacket and faded, blue shirt all matched the pale blue of the big man's eyes. James' jeans got a little bit tighter.

The cowboy chalked the end of his cue and moved into place at the end of the table, leaning down to take his shot. Sinking the five-ball in the middle pocket, the man smiled, and glanced up from his conquest, laser blue eyes locking unerringly on James' hungry, unprepared stare. He took his time standing back up, holding James in his sights the entire time, his expression unreadable.

Unable to break away from the mesmerizing stare, James blushed, squirming a little on his stool. Eyes still locked with the stranger's, James watched as the man snagged his beer off the edge of the table and took a drink, arching his neck and swallowing in long, drawn out gulps that made his throat move in an all too-seductive fashion for James' rising libido. After lowering the bottle, the stranger smiled at him, breaking the stare.

James gulped down half his beer and got up to move closer. Taking up a spot by a rough wooden post, he leaned against the support and took another sip of his beer, playing the part of just another interested spectator in the room.

The cowboy rounded the table, studying the lie of the balls, intent on his next move. Picking a tight angle from James' side of the table, the large man bent over to line up his shot, his hip making contact with James as he suddenly pulled back for the shot. James shifted to one side, startled by the unexpected touch. The stranger held the shot, straightened up and stepped in close to him, inhaling deeply.

James' breath turned to soft, little pants at the stranger's abrupt nearness. The man smelt of sweat and leather, a faint, pleasant scent that made James harden against the rough fabric of his jeans. The slight, abrasive rub of the front seam was a relief to the portion of his body seeking more immediate attention.

"Sorry."

James stepped back to give the man room and found himself brought up short against the support beam. The stranger stepped closer, trapping James between himself and the post, a position James wouldn't have minded if they hadn't been in a room full of people. Likely, no one was close enough to overhear any conversation that might take place. The big man was free to flirt or threaten, as the mood struck him. James wasn't sure which, if either, would happen, but he was definitely interested in the tall, hard body currently blocking his view of the room.

James looked up from under his lashes to see an amused, self-assured smile on the man's handsome face. He dropped his gaze, feeling self-conscious and nervous. Did the guy know what he'd been thinking? Could he see the lust in his face, read the willingness in his eyes? Was the smile genuine or just a preamble to punching him out? The same pleasant rumble from earlier drew his gaze back up to the tanned and weathered face in front of him.

"Excuse me. Need a little room to make my move." The cowboy swayed his weight from one foot to the other, his thigh grazing James' hip on the forward motion. He slid the pool cue through his hands, drawing James' gaze down to watch as the cowboy's long fingers stroked over the rod.

James glanced at the few poorly placed balls left on the table. "Doesn't look like you've got much of a shot left."

The big man smiled and glanced over his shoulder at the set up. "Seven ball center pocket." His gaze narrowed, appraising James from head to toe, settling on his clean-face. "After I win, how about I buy you a beer?"

"That's impossible."

Cowboy snorted a dry chuckle. "Which? The shot or buying you a drink?"

James swallowed and huffed out a shaky breath. His nervous habit of biting at his lower lip made the man's eyes flicker down to look at his mouth. James released his lip and licked over the abused flesh, his mouth suddenly dry.

"The shot. No way you can sink the seven-ball in the center pocket. You can't get the angle right." James shook his head, regretting the fact the man was going to lose the game and he would lose the opening for a drink with him. "I know about angles. It's part of my job."

"I like a challenge." One blue eye winked at him. "Decide what kind of beer you want."

There was something possessive and demanding in the soft, gravel tones that made James shiver. He covered his reaction by shrugging his shoulders and relaxing onto the uneven surface of the post at his back.

He nodded. "Okay. If you want to." The stranger held his gaze for a moment longer before smiling and stepping away.

"Oh, I want to." His voice was pitched low, rich and filled with a seductive promise. "This'll just take a minute."

I Like it A Bit Rough...

This book by far is one of the best homo-erotic reads I have ever read (the best being Joey W. Hill's Rough Canvas) but A Bit of Rough is definitely one of the top five. The situations and attitudes are very close to the actual thing. James' insecurities and his reactions to the given situations make total and absolute since. Bram's sure, confident attitude corresponds to how he was raised and the acceptance of his homosexuality by his parents. I highly recommend this to anyone look for hot rough sex scenes with a story and plot that actually make since.

    Awesome Read

Wow! Thought it was going to be just about the hot, erotic sex scene, but it's more than that. It's about love at first sight and how it sticks. No matter the same sex sex, it's about emotions and how everyone (women and men) are searching for: Unconditional love, love at first sight, complete commitment between 2 people who are willing to work things through even through heartaches and mistakes and the willingness to not just walk away. In today's age, commitments, relationships and even marriages are a throw-away, this book, no matter same sex, shows there is hope for more. Hope of there is no walking away and of working things through and the need to cherish and to protect those we love and how important it is to be included in each others lives.

BRAM AND JAMES ARE HOT TOGETHER! LOVED THIS BOOK!

James has a one night stand he'd never forget. Bram won't let him. Bram is an over the top mountain of a man who knows exactly who and what he wants. Jamie is a shy withdrawn man who is struggling with his sexuality. Bram wants to give James a life he's always wanted, but was too afraid to try to have, and they are a great couple together. Bram is a touching and tender man under his gruff hard exterior, and just wants a lover to come home to every night. His home, his life, his bed, have all been empty without James, and now that he's found him he won't let go. I really enjoyed this book it was a hot love story that had all different ranges of emotion, and I was really routing for Bram. And the fact that I remember this story hours and even days after I read it, well it just doesn't get better than that does it. The story continues in the next book, and even in another book I hope to read more about James and Bram in the future they are a fun read. Kudos to Laura Baumbach. Keep James and Bram's story alive.

    Captivating

I just finished reading and I was captivated from the very first paragraph. I had put off reading this initially because I thought this was another dominate male meets submissive male story (I do enjoy those when in the mood). I was so very wrong! Both men have strong personalities that mesh from their very first encounter. That first encounter had me breathless *and* laughing. Poor James wasn't sure if Bram was something to hold onto or run away from. As far as plot goes there is quite a bit considering that the story only covers a few days. What we do have is strong character development and lots of hot loving. Bram has a serious need to protect (not control). His reasons are painfully revealed as the story progresses. James has issues with trust which brings conflict between the two men. James can be quite stubborn at times and because of his trust issues, James has a tendency to jump to conclusions and 'make mountains out of mole hills.' Bram knows when to back off, but when he'd finally had enough -- I was like -- Oh Boy, here we go. That particular scene led to one of the most revealing moments of Bram's character. This was so much more that just a 'two men meet, have hot encounters and fall in love' story. Two men *do* meet and fall in love (with lots of steamy scenes), but we also see two strong *and* stubborn personalities that struggle to adjust and understand. As I've commented before - I've always loved the way Laura has written her dominate men: strong and tender, loving and compassionate. It's like her very own style. The 'bedroom' scenes are definitely explicit, but they don't overwhelm the story. There's a lot of playfulness between her guys - in bed and out of bed. Her men have their conflicts and they interact with real dialog, real emotions just like you would expect from real men.

    Great Erotic Romance

It was supposed to be a steamy one night stand. James and Bram come together in an explosive sex scene in the alley behind a club. That scene practically sets the page on fire, it is so hot. But it turns into so much more when they decide to hook up together for dinner the next night. This story has frequent graphic sex, definitely more erotica than romance, but once the romance begins to build the story takes on a new dimension. Excellent.

    A reviewer

James Justin doesn't normally cruise biker bars. His Friday nights are normally spent at home, alone. Wanting to do something exciting after being passed over for a project, the rising architect finds himself in a rowdy dive surrounded by leather wearing, tattooed, bikers. Soon his attention is drawn to a group playing pool. Especially attractive is the brawny cowboy with the sexy laugh.***** Bram Lord spots James staring at him and likes what he sees. Inviting James outside, Bram maneuvers him into the alley behind the bar and into an intense sexual encounter. Bram is stronger, bigger and more forceful than James. Everything James finds exciting in a man.***** Bram, having enjoyed the one night stand, asks to see James again. A long-term relationship looks promising for James and Bram who share intense passion and common interests. But can James overcome his secret insecurity and vulnerability to find love with the open and confident Bram?***** A Bit of Rough is sexy, exciting and tender. Yes, I said tender. The love story between the shy, but charming, James and the rugged, caring Bram is tender and romantic. I especially enjoyed the loving manner in which Bram protected James. I'm jealous of James. Bram is simply yummy. Good looking, strong, bold, secure, and down and dirty in the bedroom. A delicious combination. Not that James doesn't have a lot to offer. He does. He's kind- hearted, charming, smart, and the perfect sexual match for Bram.***** Great character development, a solid plot and scrumptiously erotic sex make for a well- written book. I enjoyed A Bit of Rough so much, I've read it twice and look forward to reading it again. For fans of gay erotica, Laura Baumbach's A Bit of Rough is a must-read.*****Reviewed by Annmarie for Joyfully Reviewed

    Love--cowboy style

This was an excellent book. I absolutely loved it. This was the first M/M romance I have ever read and it was great! The romance and affection between the Jamie and Bram was so touching. Now that I have read others, I just wish the authors would spend more time developing the relationship between the characters. It takes time to be comfortable enough to share your life with a stranger even if it starts out as a sexual encounter. It is easier to share your body. The heart we tend to closely guard. But again I love this book and look eagerly forward to the sequel.

    Romantic and Fun

Bram and Jamie are the main characters in this wonderfully romantic story by new author L Baumbach. What was suppose to be a one night stand became something more. One cannot help but fall in love with Bram and Jamie. The story is fast paced and exciting, the writing style excellent.
