Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth D. Schafer
Chomp into this delicious anthology of seven supernatural tales featuring fanged creatures, mostly werewolves and vampires, eager to pounce on unwary victims. Cautionary suggestions in the foreword foreshadow menacing situations characters encounter. Themes of vengeance, greed, and survival pierce characters' lives as they realize their vulnerabilities to lurking monstrous threats in this satisfying collection. Emphasizing the perils of grave robbing, Neal Shusterman and Terry Black warn stealing from the dead is unwise. Ellen Wittlinger tells how a lost dog, erratic neighbor, and bossy friend affect Jack when he moves to an isolated community. Christopher Paul Curtis's tale explores a bullied middle school vampire's woes. Douglas Rees reveals how snatching artifacts from ancient sites might summon beasts intent on protecting Native Americans' cultural history. Tyler and Jamie cannot resist examining coffin-shaped boxes and mounds of fresh dirt on the property of a strange new neighbor in Kevin Emerson's story. Joshua Gee presents a werewolf tale from the wolves' perspectives. Central Park vampires populate Peter Lerangis's story involving a missing girl and a mutant vampire's interactions with friends and foes. References to the Russian Revolution and DNA experimentation represent effective horror genre literary techniques to intensify readers' trepidation. Read with Edo van Belkom's Wolf Pack (2004) and the young adult anthology Immortal: Love Stories with Bite (2008), edited by P.C. Cast and Leah Wilson. Reviewer: Elizabeth D. Schafer
