Overview

Maggie blames her mom for the family's disintegration. "She’s driven him away with her constant nagging and complaining and arguing. Honestly, who could stand to live with that woman?" she vents to her friend Claire.

However, there's more to the story, and Maggie desperately wants to know the truth—something nobody seems willing to tell her.

The eighth book in the TrueColors teen fiction series, Bitter Rose takes an honest look at divorce, forgiveness, and relationships.

BItter Rose an inspiration for all...

Bitter Rose is one of 12 books in Melody Carlson's 'True Colors' series. This inspiring novel is written about a girl whose life seems to be disintegrating as her Catholic mom and dad decide to get a divorce. Maggie can to choose to forgive or continue to dwell on how bad things are. There were many aspects i really liked about this story. First, was how Maggie made her decisions throughout all her tough times. She always consulted God first and that pleased me. Second, was how Carlson put Maggie in situations that I, as a teenager, could relate to. I could feel empathy for Maggie and completely understood what she was going through. Lastly, I liked how Maggie was able to talk to her friend, Claire, about amything. She could always go to Claire and Claire would listen to Maggie's problems. There was only one thing i did ont like about this book and that was how fast paced it was. The novel jumps from Christmas to New Years to Valentine's Day in a matter of chapters and that was kind of confusing. I hope my words have made you want to read Melody Carlson's Bitter Rose.

    Bitterly Confused

Bitterly confused I read the book Bitter Rose. Maggie¿s parents are having marriage problems. When Maggie¿s parents get into one of the biggest fights ever her dad leaves. Maggie doesn¿t know exactly why her dad left. She calls her brother and sister who are off in college, when she tells them they tell her to find out there parents exact problem and get back to them. At first Maggie thinks that her mom drove her father away but she finds out differently. Since Maggie is in need for money she gets a job at her aunt¿s restaurant. When something drastic happens to her aunt she fined herself in a big ball of emotions. Why did Maggie¿s dad leave? What happened to her Aunt? Find out these things by reading the book Bitter Rose. I though that the author Melody Carlson did a good job of keeping the book going at a steady pase, you didn¿t find out to much at a time. I didn¿t like all of the things that happened in the book. This book has many different books just like it you can read anyone you like without reading the others. This book doesn¿t really remind me of any Movies or T.V shows. I think that girls would really enjoy this book but guys might enjoy it to. One interesting word that that I found in the book was a Spanish word Mi Hija, it means my daughter. I thought that this book was a very wonderful book and I would recommend you read this book.

    'How Children Get Hurt'

This book ¿Bitter Rose¿ was written by Melody Carlson. It was a very good book. I would rate this book a 4 because there was some weird stuff in it. But then again you could hardly put the book down because you always wanted to know what was happening next. On some chapters they kind of left you hanging. So then you want to keep reading to find out what¿s going to happen next. I recommend this book to kids in seventh grade and up. At some points it was sad because her parents get a divorce and she really didn¿t know what to do about it. To me it sort of seems like she was caught in the middle of the divorce. Her mom stayed and kept the house, and her dad packed his bags and left. Maggie didn¿t know what to do. So she kept in touch with her brother and sister. All three of them were going to throw them a wedding anniversary party but Maggie told them they were getting a divorce. Maggie ends up working at her aunt¿s café and she likes this guy who works there. His name is Ned. The stuff I liked about this book was that she still went and saw her dad. She also made him supper. You could tell that she loved her dad still. What I didn¿t like and what I thought was sad about this book was that her dad backed his bags and left her, and he never said bye to her. Maggie wanted them to go to a marriage consular and try to work everything out. One more thing that I didn¿t like was that her dad told her mom that she was having relation ship stuff with this guy. And at first her mom didn¿t believe her. Then she told her mom that she was serious and that her dad was lying. Maggie¿s dad went back to the house and was getting some of his stuff. So he could put it in her house. Then all of a sudden her mom drives really fast into their driveway and yells at Maggie¿s dad, and she says why are you taking my stuff. This is my stuff. She said that this was her stuff and that she bought it. Then they were just kind of yelling and Maggie had to break it up. I really recommend this book for girls. But if guys want to read the series then go ahead. This was my first time reading this series. I have only read one book out of the whole series and it was really good. I just can¿t read the next book.

    more from this reviewer

    Family Feud

Once again, Melody Carlson focuses on another subject that is touchy among the Christian church. Divorce is not something a lot of people like to talk about. Therefore teens who are in families that have divorce often have no one to talk to and go through their suffering alone. Maggie's pain is understandable. No one wants to see their family split up. You don't want to see the two people who are supposed to promote family unity just give up and walk out on you. It makes sense that Maggie is bitter and cynical towards her parents. I just didn't like though how she didn't have all the facts and kept lashing out at her mother and blaming her for the split. She didn't give her a chance to explain and kept siding with her dad. So when the truth finally comes out, it hurts Maggie more than anything. I'm glad the ending of the novel doesn't end happily. Many Christian novels have everyone making up with the family getting back together and hugs all around. Unfortunately that is not always realistic. Maggie's faith keeps her strong throughout this whole ordeal. There is a subplot which involves teen drinking and the ill effects of it. With both parents involved with their own affairs, there's no one for Maggie to turn to so she gives into peer pressure and then pays for the consequences. This is an excellent book for teens who have experienced divorce. Highly recommended teen reading.

    my 'outline' of the story.

'One night, Maggie comes home from youth group to learn that her mom and dad just had another huge fight. But this time, her dad is moving out-as in 'there's-nothing-in-the-closet-not-even-an-unmatched-sock' moving out. This one looks bad.' As i'm sure you can already tell, Maggie is the main charater, and her parents split up. Maggie has an older sister, Elisa, and an older brother, Marc, who are both older then her and out of the house. They are a hispanic family. At the beginning, Maggie blames her mother for her parents spliting up, and wants to move in with her father in the little town house appartment (thinger) that he's now renting. Soon after, Maggie goes over to visit her father, unexpectily, and she finds a younger looking (red-headed?) women in her father new appartment. Maggie runs out, and goes home, she ends up running into her mother, at their house, and her mom asks whats wrong, so even though Maggie was furious at her mom, she tells her what's wrong, and tells her about the woman at her father's place. Her mom already knows about this woman, who is Stephanie. Stephanie and Maggie's father work together, and at first, they were just friends, but over time, they 'fell in love' or so her father says. During the mean time, Maggie is starting to worry and feel horrible because she thought it was her moms fault for her father leaving. Maggie also feels like she's the only adult in her life, because her mom is trying to act younger and lose weight, she's even borrowing Maggie's clothing, and got a hair cut, and even a boyfriend. While her father already has done all of this, she feels like she must be the adult now, and get a job. So she gets a job working for her Tia (Aunt) Lousia. She had to work the night of her Harvest Dance, and because of some unknown reason (by me) a co-worker Ned, age 20, and in college, does something special for Maggie (almost 18) because she had to miss the dance to work. Ned and Maggie go out to buy a christmas tree for Maggie and her mom, for Christmas. Ned takes Maggie out with some of his friends, they both drink alchol. Maggie wants to be more adult like, by doing this, she thinks she needs to have sex with Ned. To do this, because no one really knows about them, Maggie says to meet at her house, because she knows her mom wont be home. While on the couch, Maggie and Ned start making out, she doesn't think she's ready for sex yet, and tells Ned this, Ned spazes on Maggie because he KNEW she was to young, even though it's only (about) a 2 year difference in age. Ned then starts ignoring her.. and..to find out everything else that happens in the book, that i didn't talk about..you're just going to have to buy a copy of it, or borrow it from a friend, or a local library.
