Meet the Author

LaVyrle Spencer was born in Minnesota, where she attended high school and met and married her high school sweetheart, Dan Spencer — a decision she calls the wisest choice of her life.
Although she showed a flair for writing during high school, LaVyrle didn't begin her first novel until she was in her thirties, working as a teacher's aide at Osseo Junior High School. Spencer decided to try transferring to paper a recurring dream she was having about a story based on her grandmother's lifestyle on a Minnesota farm. She awoke at 4:00 a.m. one morning, and as Spencer recalls, "you think that you can do anything at 4:00 a.m. I wrote the first half a page in a three-ring notebook with a ball-point pen." She finished that first novel, The Fulfillment, and it was published in 1979.
LaVyrle Spencer could be a character in one of her own bestselling novels, as she has experienced as much love, pain, and bliss as any of her characters. And like her heroines she is a charming mix of fire and warmth, strength, savvy and soft-heartedness. Her books are family love stories, and the characters in her novels aren't perfect, they are real people with real problems. Before they live happily ever after they must overcome some sort of adversity — pregnancy, divorce, a lengthy separation, the loss of a loved one — and then undergo a catharsis. Along the way there are moments of anger, happiness and self- revelation. The stories center on themes of abiding love, family ties and strength in difficult times. According to Spencer, "the trademark of my books is mending relationships, showing people how to mend relationships."
Whether set in the Old West of the 1880s, or today, in suburban Minnesota, opening a Spencer novel means seeing love in a new light, and meeting characters so real it's all you can do not to climb into the pages yourself.
LaVyrle and Dan Spencer live in a beautiful Victorian house in Stillwater, Minnesota, and the Spencers often escape to their rustic log cabin deep in the Minnesota woods. LaVyrle's hobbies include gardening, travel, gourmet cooking, entertaining, playing bass guitar and the electronic piano, photography, and observing nature.

    Bittersweet

I am very frustrated with the e-version of LaVyrle Spencer books, books which I have read and re-read over the years. My electronic copies are filled with errors/typos/grammerical errors. I feel cheated, paying as much as I have paid for paper formatted versions, but getting poorly editted e-versions, with no recourse.

She Makes The Characters Sooo Real

I admit that the first 75 pages or so were a bit slow but watch out - I could not put this book down. Every available min. that I would get, I would bring out my book. I would be sitting up in my bed at night with the light off, as to not disturb my husband, and I would put on a little clip light just so I could continue the book. You won't be dissapointed.

    Problem with the ebook version

Not that this book is heavy on the numbers, but for some reason none of the numeric characters downloaded at all, which makes for an annoying read. I have this book in print and it is a good one, but the publisher has really screwed up the file format on this one.

    Opinions change

I first read this book when I was 13 because it was set near my hometown. I thought the book was really good then, but as I grew up, I realized what garbage was heaped on the character of Nancy in this book to make adultery seem OK. I no longer enjoy this title because of the homewrecking that is condoned and glorified in this book. Interesting how my reaction changed over 15 years!

I read Ms. Spencer's books in the late 80's and early 90's and recently began at the top of the list and am working my way down again. Loving every minute of it. When it comes to romance with great plot lines, no one does it better than LaVyrle....and I do mean NO ONE!!!

i also liked this book much better when i was younger. then i had more sympathy for Eric, but with maturity i see him as a selfish jerk who was too cheap to buy the wife he supposedly loved a garage door opener! Eric and Nancy are portrayed as fairly financially stable--so why do they live so cheap? I have more sympathy for Nancy with each reading. The whole dual pregnancy is pretty far-fetched too. It's way easier to be pregnant and pretend to your husband you arent than vice versa I would think. And Maggie, a health and marriage instructor, and a woman who I believe was supposed to have experienced early pregnancy several times, mistaking it for menopause at only 40--come on. Maggie"s husband is such a stick figure he has no reality.  Maggie's parents were stereotypes but we loved her father' and loved to hate her mother.

    Great story....terrible quality

I was terribly disappointed in the quality of the publishing of this story. It is a wonderful piece of easy-reading.....very nostalgic and engrossing. But on almost every page I found typographical errors that eventually interfered with the beauty of the storyline. I don't know how stories are transcribed to electronic format, but this one was not done well.

Better than most of this genre

I read this book about 10 years ago because it takes place in Door County, where I try to spend at least a few days each year. I did not expect to become so taken up with the story. If you need an escape, this book is it. I've even taken it to Door County with me. The characters are believable for this part of Wisconsin, and the situation isn't all that farfetched. Having married an old flame after a 20-year separation, I ought to know!

    Fabulous

This was such a sweet love story. I cannot say enough. I went in with low expectations, as I have not read the author's other books. Truly one of my favorite now. Simply wonderful!!!

    Wonderful Love Story

Typically, I do not choose love stories, but after reading the book jacket, could not walk away from this book. After meeting Maggie and Eric, I could not put it down. Such a sweet love story- somewhat predictable, but certainly full of twists and turns. I needed a beach read and this was perfect. This is my frist read by this author, but will not be the last. Thanks for a wonderful get away, Ms. Spencer!

    Beautifully written!

I absolutely loved this book. It bring back hope to people that may have lost a spouse. The characters were so real, I found myself on the streets of this small town taking in the beauty. If you like a happily ever after story this one's for you.

    One of Spencer's Best!!

I have read this book many times because it is so beautifully written. The characters are genuine and have real problems. Spencer has outdone herself with this one. Good job, LaVyrle!!

    Her best book, ever !

I agree with all the other's comments....what a book. I too am wondering why this is not a movie yet. It would make such a wonderful love story, something that is not on the big screen anymore. This is one of the most tender books I have ever read. You wont be disappointed. This is a must read for every woman.
