Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Gothic horror, New England ghost stories and Loli fashion, along with traditional Japanese manga, are all reflected in this English-language manga. LeGrow's intricate backgrounds, fabulous costumes, architectural fantasias and painterly set pieces introducing each chapter make this book a delectable visual treat. The writing, unfortunately, doesn't rise to the same level. Unconvincingly written newspaper dispatches provide backstory and plot, while dialogue gets across the bare minimum. Dinah, the well-dressed heroine, is troubled by visions of ghosts in the empty buildings of the boarding school where she's been sent to live with an aunt, following the deaths of her parents. Decaying buildings and abandoned graveyards, rendered in a German expressionistic style, provide an impressive background to the low-key story. Dinah and her suitably slender and big-eyed companion, Vincent, meet a variety of creatures who give them a series of clunky riddles to solve. Along their way, they meet several tragically inclined ghosts. The book offers an unsatisfying ending, relying too heavily on its closing "to -be continued." The flimsy narrative will most likely be forgiven by many who will simply see it as an excuse to enjoy some very impressive art. (Aug.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

    Pleasantly Surprised

I'm a manga fan and had previously seen the Bizenghast graphic novels on shelves while shopping. I thought the cover art was pretty- very unique- but the art on the inside of the first issue seemed a bit rushed, so I never bought it.

Then I found this book, the volume one accompaniment to the Bizenghast story. At first I was skeptical, because I'd read other text versions of manga; they're usually crappy, poorly translated, jumbled, and nearly impossible to follow. So it's more than safe to say that I was blown out of the water upon reading this book! I went back later and read the manga, and it was no where near as impressive. The author does such a lovely job of painting the world of Dinah and Bizenghast- it's gorgeous. Not to mention the fact that he really takes the reader into the minds of the characters, which is something that one can't really get while reading the comics (usually.) I could hardly set the book down, I was so enthralled. I'm an avid reader of non-graphic fiction and fantasy, and I have to say that even though this book was based off of a manga, it ranks with many enjoyable original stories that I've read.

In short, this novel is -so- much easier to understand than the manga, and the author really fleshes out each character. Plus, the illustrations mixed in throughout are intricate and enjoyable. Each nightly adventure of Dinah and Vincent is chilling and unique and expressed so thoughtfully in this book. Of course, I'd highly reccomend it to fans of Bizenghast and anyone looking for a short but very fun and unique read.

    Wow...

This is not my first gothic comic/manga, but I almost wish it was. I loved the storyline, but after reading so many other mangas, it just doesn't stick out. It was a very good book, but I don't think I will keep up the series.

    Well, that's different.

I have never read a story like this one. It is definitely unique! I recommend it to those who want a little taste of something new. Terrifying, enchanting, and appeals to every reader's emotions of being afraid and alone. Outstanding characterization and plot. A definite keeper.

    I Also Recommend:

    Quirky!

An amazing gothic manga! A must-have for any fan of the quirky and darker side to fiction. Although this is only the second manga series I've started collecting, it's already become a precious treasure amongst my books. The characters Ms. LeGrow created are as unique as the dark setting she has created, and you really do start to empathize for the situation Dinah is in. Please check into this series!

    Great!

I'll admit that I was a little skepttical that this book would be as good as the manga. But it was amazing how the author showed Bizenghast with words instead of pictures. He really brought the story to life and it was hard to put it down!

A great beginning to an amazing series

As the first book to a series that often blows minds, Bizenghast fills all of my expectations. After quickly devouring this volume, I consumed the whole series, and am now waiting to buy the fifth volume. My best friend and I almost imediatly claimed male characters, and my male friend fell in love with Dinah at an inhuman speed (Ari claimed Edrear, I claimed Vincent, and we decided to share Edaniel after a VERY long battle that almost ruined our friendship). So, on behalf of the OBFC (official bizenghast fan club) this series is reccomended to the fullest extent!!!

    Love it!

Who could resist?? I've read both of these books, and I've only had them for two days. Bizenghast is one of my first mangas (Life was the first). It's probably my favorite. Diana and Vincent are a cute couple^.^
