Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Bud wants to keep his new black and white puppy, but his mom insists that they not name him until he proves he can be a good farm dog. When the puppy disappears, Bud has a hard time finding him because he blends in so well with the other breeds of black and white farm animals. Was there an extra goat in the goat pen? Did Bud see a floppy ear in the chicken coop? Just when Bud is ready to give up, the long pink tongue of a cow slurps across the missing dog. The dog was there all the time! Even mom agrees—this dog fits in just fine. It's as plain as black and white. The text is simple with easy to read, believable questions and conversational quotes. The exceptional illustrations make it fun to find the black and white dog amidst English spot rabbits, Jacob sheep, and other breeds of black and white animals. Based on a true story, this dog finds a home and a perfect name. 2000, Rising Moon, Ages 6 to 10, $12.95. Reviewer: Dia L. Michels
School Library Journal
PreS-K-When Bud finds a white dog with black spots and wants to keep him, his mother tells him that first they must be sure that he doesn't frighten the farm animals. The pup disappears and the action that follows centers around the boy looking for him amid the rabbits, sheep, chickens, llamas, pigs, goats, ponies, and cows-all of which are black and white. Children are sure to notice the camouflaged dog in each scene. Bud's mother's statement, "Why, that dog fits in just fine-It's as plain as black and white" prompts her son to name his pet just that: "Black and White-B.W. for short." The writing is average at best, and at times forced. Neidigh's gouache-and-colored-pencil illustrations focus on the many animals but the features of the human characters are less well defined. Children may enjoy finding the canine in the barnyard scenes, but that alone is not enough to save this book.-Meghan R.
