More About This Textbook

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
A welcome new resource on the achievements of black Americans in the arts, this is the first work to encompass all the arts in one volume. The contributors are involved in the areas they write on and write from a black perspective. With no governing editorial policy, the subject essays vary in style, format, and depth of coverage. Each essay presents a review of the year's activities in one of the arts: literature, theater, art, dance, music, photography, movies, and TV. Most of the essays are well written and are current and accurate reports of the year's events. The essay on art, however, is more densely written, longer, and less usable for quick reference than the others, while the essay on photography provides only the briefest review of activities, followed by a list of exhibitions. A governing editorial policy might be considered for future yearbooks to ensure greater uniformity. Meanwhile, this is still an excellent resource. Essential for libraries serving black populations. Photographs not seen.-- Renata Ochsner, Harvey P.L., Ill.
