Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
One of seven in the "Food is CATegorical" series, this edition uses Seuss-like rhymes and cartoonish cat characters to explain the meat and beans groups in the food pyramid and encourages wise choices within it. The text mentions amounts needed daily, types of foods within the group and names many of the kids within each type while encouraging the recommended daily allowances and their benefits to the body. Youngsters may not be familiar with the word ounces but examples of amounts are given within the text and again, at the end of the book. The rhymes and illustrations serve to keep youngsters interested in this introduction to a most important subject. With childhood obesity on the rise, young people need to be more aware of what they put into their mouths and what it does to their bodies. An illustrations of the USDA Food Pyramid and examples of appropriate food amounts are included at the end of the book as well as resources for further information. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.
