Beautiful Storytelling,Great Blend of Romance,Comedy and Fantasy

Let me just clarify something first: My rating for this manga title is actually 4 and 1/2 stars, but it would not allow me to fill half a star in. I try to remain spoiler free and I do quick numerical range (1-10) reviews of the most important aspects of the title work. 1 is poor, 5 is great, 10 is exceptional. Story Concept- 8. The whole prophecy bride idea is somewhat overdone, but the way this story spins the theme to say the bride was actually meant for another man was a nice twist. I also liked the turn-around ending which explained the bride's true purpose of existence. Character Development- 10. By the end of the story, you know everything about every character, minor and major alike. Plot Progression- 7. I like damsel in distress story-lines if they are done well and not repetitive. The repetition of the bride always in danger in this one does get annoying sometimes. Especially when she gets in the same situation with the same bad guy over and over and over. Other than that hitch, the plot progresses quite smoothly, though it can drag in some volumes. Plot- As a Romance: 7. As a Comedy: 8. As a Fantasy: 10. The featured romance between the leads is a mixture of innocence, obsession, and lust. The male lead respects the female lead enough to wait till she is ready for a mature relationship, but he tends to treat her like a child before and after they become physical. The female lead is young throughout most of the story, and her naivete can be grating at times, but she is capable of great strength of will. They in fact physically and emotionally save each other many times. The interplay between the leads and their supporting characters is often very funny, but some of the best comedic moments are between the lovers. The overall story-line is dark, but the laughs are plentiful. The fantasy side of the story is by far its strongest aspect. Writing- 9. A very thorough world build here. Expressive, clean dialogue that is clear and moves the story along smoothly. The main story arcs for the major characters are easy concepts but they are given a stylized telling that makes them seem much more complex. This is plot-thread layering at its best. My one issue with the writing was that events in the final two volumes were not as clearly explained as they could have been and I often had to re-read pages a few times to grasp the meaning of some of the images. Imagery- 9 and 1/2. I loved the visual depiction of this story! The characters and the scenery were drawn well and had depth. All scenes were clean. The cover art was always engaging. The one thing that irked me was the occasional multi-frame scene breakdowns that were just not detailed enough to figure out what I was supposed to be seeing. Once I even had to flip the book upside-down to figure out what had been depicted on a page..and even then it took a few minutes to see it. Overall, this manga is one of my all-time favorites and I am a tough sell when it comes to romance and fantasy. I think what drew me originally was the cover art, what made me buy the entire series was the skill with which the story was told. I was never bored or confused while reading. I was enchanted, interested, and involved. I happily recommend this manga series all the time.

    Well...

The finale to the Black Bird series. You know what? It wasn't that bad. I know I say eh these volumes were okay or interesting. But they are. And the covers are gorgeous. Anyway, this was well, yeah you get the idea.
