Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Although their edgy new fashion statement is more thrift-store funky than Milan runway chic, not much else has changed for the Backstreet Boys on their third disc, Black & Blue. And for die-hard fans, that's a good thing. Instead of heading for club-thumping territory like their boy band rivals 'N Sync, Black & Blue finds the Boys remaining true to their roots with a winning mix of bouncy, up-tempo tunes -- the pouncing synth track "The Answer to Our Life" and the spunky Rodney Jerkins-produced "Shining Star" -- and syrupy ballads such as the soon-to-be wedding day classics "I Promise You With Everything I Am" and "Yes I Will." Although their edgy new fashion statement is more thrift-store funky than Milan runway chic, not much else has changed for the Backstreet Boys on their third disc, Black & Blue. And for die-hard fans, that's a good thing. Instead of heading for club-thumping territory like their boy band rivals 'N Sync, Black & Blue finds the Boys remaining true to their roots with a winning mix of bouncy, up-tempo tunes -- the pouncing synth track "The Answer to Our Life" and the spunky Rodney Jerkins-produced "Shining Star" -- and syrupy ballads such as the soon-to-be wedding day classics "I Promise You With Everything I Am" and "Yes I Will." There are some changes, of course. Instead of Brian Littrell's earnest vocals, flamboyant A. J. McLean's gravely pipes come to the fore on several tracks including the hymn-like ballad "Time" and the funky dance cut "Not for Me." While the boys take a stab at playing down and dirty on "The Call," on which they make triflin' "my cell phone didn't work" excuses for their cheatin' ways, it's not a great fit. The Backstreet Boys are at their wholesome best when gushing sentimental odes such as the Max Martin-penned masterpiece "Shape of My Heart" and the soaring ballad "More Than That." As long as their pristine vocals remain intact, it's hard to imagine these hit-making heartthrobs disappointing their faithful.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
When 'N Sync usurped the Backstreet Boys' record of number of albums sold in a single week early in 2000, it had to hurt the Backstreets, since it was played in the press as if they had lost the teen pop throne. By the time the group released their third album, Black & Blue, Thanksgiving week 2000, 'N Sync was still popular, but the arc of No Strings Attached illustrated that they were weak where the Backstreets were strong -- namely, they couldn't really deliver the seductive mid-tempo pop tunes and ballads that were the backbone of the Boys' crossover success. Songs like "Shape of My Heart," which flows as gracefully as "I Want It That Way," prove that the Backstreet Boys do teen pop ballads better than anyone, but what's interesting about Black & Blue is how aggressively they protect their territory. Of course, it's relative protection, since they, like 'N Sync and Britney Spears, work with Max Martin, the man behind the biggest hits by all three artists. Consequently, it's not a coincidence that "Get Another Boyfriend" is a dead ringer for "It's Gonna Be Me" crossed with "Baby One More Time," but what gives Black & Blue character is that it's clear that the Backstreets want to remain kings of their world. So, the ballads are smoother than ever, and their dance numbers hit harder, all in an attempt to keep their throne. It works, even if it takes a couple spins before the singles stand out, since the Backstreets' material and voices are stronger than that of their peers, adding up to state of the art teen-pop.

All Five boys contributed to the writing and producing of Black & Blue. Two of the songs... are immediate standouts: "Time," a mid-tempo number that was produced by Babyface and cowritten by the group, and "The Call," an edgy dance tune about a guy who gets caught cheating on his girlfriend.

    A BSB Fan

Being a fan of the Backstreet Boys I found the CD Black & Blue very good. Having more than 1 good song and lyrics that allows people of all ages to listen to them.''Shape of My Heart'' is one of their popular songs that has an up-beat tune and lyrics.Black & Blue shows how the Backstreet Boys have changed from their Young Boy Band image to now with their Older Boy Band image that reaches a broader audience.Allowing them to become more and more popular every day. That is why I have found the Black & Blue CD very enjoyable.

Black and Blue Album (The best c.d.)

When I purchased black and blue, and came home to listen to it, I was really amazed by their sound and music. You can tell the Backstreetboys have come along way since they first started. It's not teenybopper music no more. They have really grown up, and it's music for all ages. They have slow songs, love ballads, and upbeat. Songs even to dance too. The words of some songs have alot of meaning, and you can even relate to some. The five boys.. Brian, Aj, Kevin, Howie, and Nick show that they are growing up into men, and trying to get people everywhere to listen to their music.

This is absolutely the best album I've purchased this year. The music is stunning, and keeps me listening... forever... The Backstreet Boys have the most gorgeous pop music voices around, and are second to none. Simply awesome.

BLACK & BLUE THROWS ALL THE RIGHT PUNCHES

what I really love about this cd is you get to hear a different sound from each song. They have really grown up sine MILLENIUM!! BLACK & BLUE gives a great blend of ballads & dance tracks: ''More than That'', ''Time'', ''I Promise You''- beautiful!!! ''Get Another Boyfriend'' makes you want to get up and start dancing! Nick really deserves the credit on that one! He is fabulous on that song! ''Not for Me'' is also great and wow, first I wasn't sure about ''Shining Star'' but after hearing them perform it live made me give it another listen and it is fantastic!! BLACK & BLUE is a cd for everyone and almost all ages. GO BUY IT!!!

    BSB ARE #1!!!

this cd is one of the best i've ever heard. the songs are always so good! they actually devote whole songs to stuff that groups like NSTINK dont' even mention. These guys are the best ''boy band'' (i only call them a boy band for lack of better wording) out there, even though they're MORE than just a cheesy pop act that's going to fall through within a few years. i absolutely LOVE the call and pretty much all of the songs. #13 is one of the sweetest songs ever, and MAN can i relate to what they're saying there! if you don't have a copy of this cd, then go out and buy it. this is the strongest through and through that they have made yet. if there was any possible way to give it more than five stars i would! I listen to this to pick me up whenever i feel bad, and to get me relaxed at night, and when i need to get hyped up to do something.

    lack of musical creativity

I feel that the Backstreet Boys newest album is incredibly poor. First of all, the groups sound has not changed since their debut album. Their style has not improved or matured, as the artists have. The boys seem reluctant to go out on a creative limb. Also, all the songs on Black and Blue sound the similar, almost as if its the same song with different lyrics. In addition, the covor and title were not very original or enticing. I will stick with *NSYNC...boys who can sing, dance well, write/produce many of their songs, and go out on a creative limb with constantly a changing sound.

    Good CD just weird releases

I love the CD just what the heck is going on? I received a CD with only the 13 Tracks. Where my Sister received her Cd a couple of months before and got the 14 track? why can't they all be the same. I think many people agree with me. Now I have to update my collection. I already have two different Millenniums if any one is looking for one(12 track only).

East or West the BackStreet Boys are the Best

I believe this Cd is the bomb. All the songs are just so great and the guys included different types of music( slow and fast) besides it's so obvious that the guys are more mature(you'll sense that when you'll listen to all the songs, they'll touch your heart right away). This Cd is surely going to knock Nsync out and claim to number one and stay there for a long time so come on hurry up you've gotta buy this CD.
