Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4–7—Siblings Amy and Dan Cahill continue their quest for clues to the family's source of power with non-stop action and adventure that takes them to Volograd, Russia, in this episode by Patrick Carman (Scholastic, 2009). They chase down riddles left to them by "NNR" in one of the more complex books of the series. Incorporated within this story are famous landmarks centering on historical icons in Russian history, such as Rasputin. In their quest, they uncover a treasure stolen by the Nazis and the truth behind the murder of the last Russian royal family. The Madrigals play an integral role among the deceptions and espionage. David Pittu does an admirable job of narrating, giving each character a distinctive voice; listeners may find the chronic raspy quality of Dan's voice wearing by the end of the story. The exaggerated voicing of the bonus material at the end of the story is reminiscent of old time radio shows.—Tina Hudak, St. Albans School, Washington, DC

Amy and her brother Dan are awakened abruptly by the bellboy at the Egyptian hotel. He has arrived at their room to deliver yet another clue in their search for a most immense power. Amy and Dan are not the only ones in search of the 39 clues. Hamilton Holt is close behind, and he is not showing any signs of mercy. The siblings are soon off to Russia, channeling Rasputin for some much needed guidance. Then, Amy and Dan are uncovering Lucian secrets, and Irina Spasky is hot on their tail. Before long, they are uncovering clues from Tsar Nicholas and his brother, Constantine; these clues will prove to be instrumental and pragmatic. This is their most dangerous journey yet, as it brings the realization that the Madrigals are more powerful than the Lucians. The latest edition of the "39 Clues" series will not disappoint even the most skeptical readers. This book and the series could be especially enticing to reluctant readers. Reviewer: Summer Whiting
