Overview

With its eclectic mix of vampire and human citizens, Morganville, Texas, has always been a risky place to call home. But with the invasion of the vampire’s deadliest enemy, Morganville isn’t just in danger—it’s dying…

Ever since the draug—mysterious creatures that prey on vampires—took over Morganville, the lives of student Claire Danvers and her friends have been thrown into turmoil. Most of the town’s residents have evacuated, but Claire, Shane, Eve and Michael have chosen to stay and fight.

Using the city’s water system to spread, the draug have rapidly multiplied. Things in Morganville look grim, especially since vampire Amelie—the town founder—has been infected by the master draug’s bite. Now, if Claire and her friends don’t figure out how to cure Amelie and defeat the draug, it looks like Morganville will become little more than a ghost town…

Kirkus Reviews
The 12th episode in the Morganville Vampires series finds the town besieged by the terrifying draug, water beings that feed on vampires. Throughout their history, the vampires have never defeated the draug. Human Claire, the series heroine, her boyfriend Shane and her friends, Eve and her vampire fiancé Michael, will find new ways to fight, but not without cheating death. All the while the town's leader Amelie lies dying from a draug bite. Indeed, it looks as though Morganville has had it. Although readers know that Caine won't allow that to happen, she works the tension beautifully, keeping the cliffhangers coming. She delves into Shane's character most deeply in this installment, after he's captured by the draug. The eccentric vampire Myrnin, Claire's scientist boss, stands out as the book's most interesting and entertaining character, providing both comic relief and some nice plot turns. The romance scenes in the novel don't rise above most other paranormal romances, and the writing relies on frequent use of italics, but the author's imagination easily tops the average, keeping the book constantly interesting. Her suspense scenes, the heart of this series, crackle with vitality and occur frequently enough to induce white knuckles. The plot includes enough explication that new readers can orient themselves. This series continues to provide terrific action and great entertainment. Plenty of fun. (Paranormal suspense. 12 & up)

THEY GET BETTER AND BETTER! Our Review [by Michelle L. Olson – LITERAL ADDICTION’s Pack Alpha]: I love the Morganville Vampires series and have been an avid follower since book #1. While I didn’t think that anything could surpass the incredibleness that was Book #11, Last Breath, I stand corrected after the completion of Black Dawn. If I said that Last Breath was a home run, then Black Dawn was a grand slam! Like all Morganville books, there was tons of action, danger lurking around every corner, sweet romance, problems to be solved, friendships solidified, alliances forged, enemies made and mysteries galore, all packed into a fabulously eerie and quirky package. Like Last Breath, Black Dawn gives us insight into other characters by switching between points of view. It was seamlessly written and a wonderful gift for the reader to get inside these other characters’ heads. Last Breath was definitely darker than the other Morganville books. They’ve been getting increasingly darker installment after installment (to my utter delight), but there were times during Black Dawn that you could actually feel the hopelessness, and those times just lent more credibility to the glimpses of hope that were uncovered like rays of sunshine. While Morganville is known for its danger, and we fans have come to expect and love the town and its residents for it, the Morganville in Black Dawn is literally flooded with death, destruction and despair. All that deranged action is thrown at you in a non-stop thrill ride that grabs you from the very beginning and doesn’t’ really ever let go, because even after completion of the last page, you want to scream, “Well, what now??”. The character development in Black Dawn was intense, the storyline intriguing and demanding nothing short of utter investment, and the world, in true Rachel Caine fashion, beautifully fashioned. LITERAL ADDICTION gives Black Dawn a thoroughly deserved 5 Skulls, and would recommend it to EVERYONE! Morganville may be classified as YA, but we like to call it YA for the not-so-young-adult, and this installment proved that Rachel can capture both sides of the audience with ease. I am so happy that there will be more Morganville to come. I absolutely adore this series.

In Last Breath, the rain brought a new and dire threat to Morganville and its vampires... their ancient enemies, the draug. Now, the vampires are fighting a losing war, and it will fall to the residents of the Glass House: Michael, Eve, Shane and Claire, to take the fight to an enemy who threatens to destroy the town, forever. Lovers of Morganville, rejoice: Black Dawn takes the intrigue, romance and nail-biting suspense of the series to its highest level yet! (Summary in Book) My Review: Black Dawn picks up almost right were the last book left off, with Claire and friends trying to figure out any way possible to fight off Magnus and his thrall. (Magnus is a Master draug, and ancient enemy of Vampires) Since the draug live as part of water, that means the storms hitting Morganville are much more deadly, and even the drinking/washing water isn’t safe. With Amelie bitten and transforming into a draug herself, Oliver is stepping up to take over with possibly disastrous results. Will Claire and Myrnin be able to come up with a successful weapon before Amelie is turned and even more h**l breaks loose? Well, it is an exciting read, packed with adventure, and twist and turns. I really enjoyed it, and I have read all the previous books, and it surprises me that with this being the 12th book, it’s one of the best. If you read the early ones, and wasn’t hooked, you should give this one a try, these books really have gotten better, especially the last few ones in the series. Here is a quote I found especially funny, I previously shared this on my blog as a teaser. Kindle location 481 Shane settled his flamethrower more comfortable on his shoulders. “Ladies? After you.” “Rude,” Claire said. “I was being polite!” “Not when you have a flamethrower.” I also thought it was so funny that Shane nicknamed Myrin Batty McCrackula, lol I really enjoyed how we got to dip into the minds of more characters. The last book did this some, but only a few people. In this one, we will have whole chapters from another’s POV, we get inside Michael, Eve, Amelie, Oliver, Shane, and Naomi, but the majority is still Claire. I really liked that. I was thinking it might have been cool to get a POV of Myrnin, but then thought, that might have been a little crazy in there, lol. Overall? Black Dawn is a great continuation of the Morganville Vampires series. You will be hanging on the edge of your seat, with all the action and suspense going on.

This has always been my favorite series. I only wish tht Claire and Myrnin end up together. Dont get me wrong i LOVE Shane but something about Myrnin and Claire being together gets me excited. Eve and Michael...its sad how they're relationship is goin on so far. I think they're great together but not so much anymore. They are slowly drifting apart the one thing Eve was afaid of is coming true. Either way i love all the twists an turns these books have nd I cant wait for the next book. THANK YOU, RACHEL CAINE FOR COMING UP WITH THIS AMAZING WORLD!!

Great story line, likable characters (even the "bad" ones), fast paced action, twists, turns, humor, conflict, and just enough romance without it being too mushy. All the components of a great novel. You won't want to put it down until you read the last page! Black Dawn, book 12 in the Morganville Vampires series picks up where Last Breath ended. The vampires of Morganville prepare to battle their most feared enemy, the Draug. They are a water based creature that can reproduce and spawn in a puddle. Every wonder why they built Morganville in the middle of BFE (or rather BFTexas). What better place to hide from a water based enemy than the middle of the hot Texas desert. Morganville vamps have been running from the Draug for centuries before settling in Morganville, their last safe haven. Now most of the vampires and humans have fled, but not the residents of the Glass House. They remain behind to help fight this new threat. As in Black Dawn, Ms. Caine gives us insight into other characters by switching between points of view. It was seamlessly written and the chapters flow beautifully from one person to another. Each character has such a very unique voice, making it easy to know who was narrating the chapter. It is a true gift for the reader to get inside the heads of these other characters. To find out more about what they are feeling and experience. The things that motivates and define how they act to what's going on around them. It makes for some interesting character growth. Shane's feelings about Claire, Eve's struggle to overcome her fear of Michael after he attacked her in Last Breath, Oliver's feelings toward Amelie, and even Hanna's feelings for Richard Morrell. I'm glad this was not the last book for the series. I can't wait for #13 - Bitter Blood. The title alone has my head spinning wondering what's going to happen! I can't wait to see how everything plays out!

Even though I knew coming into this book that there were more after...I had moments where I was so into the story that I was like "Omg this is it, this is the end of Morganville!" And after finishing, perhaps it is...perhaps it is the end of Morganville as we formerly knew it! That's what's so great about this series though, with a series this long it's refreshing to have new storylines and different twists and turns that keep everything exciting and still make you want to come back for more. I had been told by someone that these books got boring after awhile and were too predictable. I've not found that to be the case for me...each book takes the characters in a direction I've never seen a teen vampire book go before. In #12 you will get scared...you will get scared for lives, you will get scared for relationships, you will even get scared for some of the vampires you might not care about too much. There's a lot going on and a lot to process and in the end, while we still get a cliffhanger, it's a little more bearable than others within the series. If you enjoy paranormal romance, or vampire books in general...get out and get started on your Morganville adventure!

I wanted to read Black Dawn because I had to know what was going to happen with Amelie, and I am loving this series in general. I have raced through them and can't stop making moments to read it.     It was hard seeing Eve and Michael having a hard time after the events in the last book, but I am so rooting for them to somehow make it work. But some of the comments and being in M's head makes me think that maybe it won't. I hope so hard that I am misreading it though, because even though Eve has such a vulnerability she is also very strong and knows how to handle herself.     Claire is coming even more into her own, and less afraid to speak up. She had a confrontation with Oliver, and I was so proud of her. I sincerely hope that some cure can be found for Amelie, but it was looking pretty grim, and I wondered just how Morganville would continue to exist and how the humans would fare if Oliver did take over.      It was neat though, to see humans and vamps working side by side and growing a bit more appreciation for the other in fighting the powerful draugh. They are water dwellers, and can move and multiply. Though they prefer vamps, they will go after humans too, and it was very action filled as they were fighting them. I was worried by the tone that the epilogue took, but I imagine it will just be another obstacle for them to overcome.     It didn't disappoint with keeping me guessing, bringing new challenges and developing the charac ters that I have come to love or at least love to hate. There is still the hint of unpredictability, and characters acting in a way that I haven't come to line up with their personalities and actions thus far.      Definitely still enjoying the series, and will continue until its over, at which point I might cry. Bottom Line: Good installment, new enemies to fight and insights on the characters.
