Dohar (history, U. of Notre Dame) combines local and church history to explore the behavior of priests in southwest England during and after a period of devastating plague. He recounts how priests who survived the disease abandoned their parishioners in fear or to replace the dead holders of more lucrative posts. He concludes however that ecclesiastical structures responded well to the shortage of priests and did not compromise the traditional standards of pastoral competence as is often claimed.
