Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

In which denim-clad men and work-booted, pony-tailed, mom-jean-wearing women measure, fix, and construct various aspects of homes. Coverage of the entire home, from attic to basement, are illustrated well enough to make a grown man drool. From installing a new vanity to a sleeper floor in the basement, this offers enough instruction to step you through the major operations of each project, but watch out—it does not deal with covering everything that can (and will) go wrong or be freaky with your miserable excuse for a house. From installing metal ceilings to ceramic tile to three ways (three way switches, you filthy-minded galoot!), it’s all here. Other topics to pique your dude radar: installing wallboard. Bullnose edging. Installing an undersink garbage disposal. It might as well be a picture of Jessica Simpson—you can’t look away, can you? - Library Journal, April 1, 2010

Black & Decker The Complete Photo Guide to Home Improvement. Creative Pub: Quayside. 2009. c.560p. illus. index. ISBN 978-1-58923-452-9. $35. DIY

This comprehensive manual is an update to the 2005 edition. Some new materials, like bamboo flooring, have been added, and outdated materials have been dropped. If you need a comprehensive manual on the topic, this will do nicely. -- Library Journal, June 2009

This comprehensive manual is an update to the 2005 edition but not by much. Some new materials, like bamboo flooring, have been added, and outdated materials have been dropped. If you need a comprehensive manual on the topic, this will do nicely.

Well Illustrated Guide for Home Improvement

First of all, anyone buying this book should realize that it is what its title says: a book on home improvement, not home repair. For example, the book shows how to install hardwood strip flooring. The book does not discuss how to repair an existing hardwood floor. However, the book does treat topics like removing an existing plaster wall since such removal may be needed for a home improvement project.

The book is written for homeowners, not professionals. For the homeowner the book does cover about all the types of home improvement projects that an amateur (like me) would attempt: walls, ceilings, floors, and lighting along with kitchens and bathrooms. Everything is well illustrated, in fact the detailed photographs of every step are the strength of the book. The photographs are clear and provide an excellent guide to each step. Looking through all the photographs provides a good view of what needs to be done.

For most projects the book seems to provide all the information needed, but there are gaps. For example, the book does not discuss how to treat the exposed edges of that hardwood floor you just installed. For complex projects additional information or some expert help may be needed.

Overall, this is an excellent single volume book on home improvement. It may not answer every possible question, but it seems superior to other single volume books on the subject.
