Michael Knight and Lex Devlin agree to defend a jockey accused of murdering a fellow jockey during a race at Bostons Suffolk Downs. Michaels expertise in the machinations of the horse racing game is expected to serve them well. But a personal attachment to the murdered jockey thrusts Michael and Lex into the midst of conflict between Bostons Irish mafia and remnants of the terrorist branch of the Irish Republican Army. Now they are in the crosshairs of both, and the brutality of these combatants knows no bounds. As Michael and Lex uncover layer after layer of deceptions involved in the seamier side of horse racing, they become more dangerous to the gangs. In action that shuttles between Ireland and Boston, the lives of the lawyers as well as those close to them are in the gravest danger and the criminals show no mercy in their quest to put an end to this threat. As their investigation hurtles forward, it could end a wonderful law partnership due to the absence of living partners.

I had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Dobbyn speak at a signing for his book, “Black Diamond.” His knowledge of and enthusiasm for the world of horse racing was a particular pleasure for me, a fellow horse enthusiast. His knowledge of not only the world of racing, but the locales he selects: Boston and Ireland, makes his descriptions so vivid, I believe it would feel familiar to me if I were to visit the Curragh in County Kildare although I have not been there except in my adventure with Mr. Dobbyn. His appeal is universal and his stories so timely, we are sharing his books across generational lines in my family; my son is reading it now. My daughter purchased the book as a gift for a friend of hers who is a native of Ireland and said she became so engrossed, she expected to see her homeland if she glanced out the window. And I won’t give it away here but when I read the “answer to the mystery,” I thought, “wow, I did not expect that” and I loved it. Count me as another of Mr. Dobbyn’s growing list of fans.

I thought it was going to be a horse-racing thriller - a la Dick Francis, but instead it turned out to be a sit on the end of your seat, page turner. The main character is believable, and it is easy to see how he slowly ends up pulled deeply into the complexities of the Boston and Irish gangs.
The female characters were weak, purely there for fluff, not one of them filing out or being other than the barest outline of a stereotype. And around the middle of hte book it starts to bog down in its pacing. However, if you can live with that then this book is a fun read.
