Egyptologist Bauval, author of the best-selling The Orion Mystery, and astrophysicist Brophy make a compelling argument regarding the origins of ancient Egyptian civilization, a Black African people that predated the pharaohs. Looking into remote areas of the Sahara and acknowledging earlier remarkable explorations, the authors proclaim to "have coaxed the silent, ancient stones to reveal their secrets with the universal language of the sky." The Stonehenge-like cluster of megaliths at Nabta Playa reveals a mysterious civilization and the supposition that the people's "practical knowledge of the stars was converted into a star religion..." The authors discuss tales of a long-undiscovered stone temple, provide a fascinating study of hieroglyphics, and examine the astronomy-driven nature of the alignment of stones; they're always cautious in their interpretations, however, noting a tendency even within physical science to find only what one sets out to find. Extremely dense and possibly groundbreaking, Bauval and Brophy make an honest case for a "very different story of the origins of ancient Egypt." Their scholarship is meticulous-but too much so for the everyday reader. 16-page color insert and 50 b&w illus.(c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
