Takhini Wolves, Book 1

Lone wolf Shaun Stevens's automatic response to the words "happily ever after"? Kill me now. Yet with all his friends settling down he's begun to think there may actually be something to this love-and-roses crap.

One thing's for sure: his dream mate will have to out-cuss, out-spit and out-hike him. So he never expected the one to push his forever button would be a blue-blooded Southern debutante with a voice as dark and velvety as her skin.

When Gemmita Jacobs steps off the plane in Whitehorse, Yukon, it's about more than her caribou research project. It's her declaration of independence from an overprotected upbringing. Except there's something in the air she can't quite define-something that unexpectedly rouses her mating instincts.

Moments after their eyes lock, the deed is done-and done thoroughly. When the pheromone dust settles, though, all the reasons they don't belong together become painfully clear.

It's enough to make a wolf learn a whole new set of cuss words...

Warning: Two strong wolves getting exactly what they deserve. Includes wilderness nookie, shifters being naughty in public places, the Midnight Sun as a canopy for seduction and grizzly shifters on the loose. Oh, and don't forget the sarcasm.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“The intense sexual encounters between Gem and Shaun, paired with the thickness in the air of an always lingering fight, are sure to keep the pages turning. Readers who find novels like Kerrelyn Sparks’s The Vampire and the Virgin appealing will surely enjoy taking a bite out of this first title in the ‘Takhini Wolves’ series.”

    Ugh!

Sometimes this author makes her characters more like caricatures. Gem, for example, is not just the stereo-typical spoiled little rich girl, but she is also out of touch with reality. She never once, not even for a moment, thought that the fact that every one of her university classes came to her home as unsual? Then she gets upset when someone wonders how much "Daddy" paid for this front-door service. They did it just because he asked them to. Honestly, its not even naive, its just stupid. Eventually she does show a small amount of growth, but not nearly enough to consider this a good story. Oh, and did i mention Gem was incredibly selfish? At no point was she ever willing to even consider a compromise. I didn't like the character, and I like her development even less. In the end I was left feeling sorry for Shaun. He deserved so much better.

    Disappointing

While i have enjoyed many other books by this author......not this one. Very disappointing. I found the character of Gem to be nothing more than a spoiled, annoying little rich girl. Though her charscter did begin to have some personal growth, it was too little to late to make her a likable character...and especially not enough to make her a good match with Shaun. In the end, i simply felt sorry Shaun; that he got syuck with Gem as a mate. Read the second book in the series, Silver Mine.....much better.

I disliked this book. The characters had no chemistry. And, Gem's character flaw was too pronounced. I get that she was supposed to be a sheltered heiress, but it was just a bit too much for my taste. Couple that with the fact that Sean is so street smart and worldly the two make an odd match. I didn't feel their connection at all. The sex scenes were really dry. I was more interested in the side plot then the main plot.

    My Thoughts

In 2010 read book one Wolf Signs in Granite Lake series and knew that author Vivian Arend had a way of bringing to life some very good stories set in the far north of Alaskan wilderness and the Yukon. Not only are the settings that she describes ruggedly beautiful but very appealing as they are perfect for the paranormal characters who inhabit them.

At a little over 200 pages this book is jam packed with action, it also really allows us to see how both Shaun and Gem evolve into richer characters as their relationship as new mates solidifies into a true partnership between the two rather than the initial battle of wills it started out with.

Great beginning to the series and much better than most were stories where the mating issue is only dealt with through physical attraction rather than actually forming an attachment with compromises on both parties part which was very refreshing to read.

I was excited to find this available online as a library lend, hope to find more from Vivian Arend to borrow in the future as well!

I really enjoyed this story. It has two storylines. Our main hero and heroine Shaun and Gemmita are a great pair, even if things start off a little rough for them. Gem has lived a very sheltered and in the life of luxury. Now she is stepping out into the Yukon to do research for a paper. She has a lot to prove to her father, the people of town and herself. Shaun has always lived the bachelor life, doing backcountry tours.

Although this story has the fated mates thing with werewolves, you still see this pair struggle with how they are going make it work for them longterm. There are questions about where they live. Do they stay in the Yukon, which Shaun loves or move to the only home that Gem has ever known.

There is also a great secondary story with Evan, the alpha and Caroline, his human assistant. Their story was great. I really wished that they had gotten a book of their own, instead of a side story in this book. Hopefully, we will get more of them in future books.
Overall great story with some suspense and romance. Can't wait to get to book two in this series.

    Lilywolf

Lilywolf grins and brushes Goldenstripe's pelt happily. "Yes I suppose we should. But I always love coming here!" The tabby nuzzles him lovingly. She is so thankful for him. No one has as pure of a heart as him. The tabby purrs as she walks step for step with him back to camp. Her heart only would belong to him. No matter what, she would always love the golden tom. ~ Lilywolf &hearts P.S. Yes I liked Gale. I like the idea of best friends falling in love (since my best friend from where I use to live... ya miss him so much...). And Gale was overall a great guy. But he just had to go poking his nose into bomb making! Gosh dang you Gale!
