Children's LiteratureThe Black Hawk helicopter stands out as one of the most versatile and complex military vehicles presently in use. A remarkably difficult machine to fly, the Black Hawk requires significantly more advanced flight training than most other aircraft. The Black Hawk can be used as a minelayer, tank buster, missile launch system or observation craft. First used in the 1983 incursion into Grenada, the Black Hawk has also seen combat service in Serbia, Kuwait, Somalia and a variety of other military deployments. Federal drug enforcement agents, the Coast Guard and fire fighters have also utilized the Black Hawk helicopter. These uses, as well as the overall design and maintenance of the Black Hawk, are presented in this illustrated book. While the author does a capable job of presenting the Black Hawk and the people who typically fly it, the book is somewhat flawed. The use of dramatic scenarios to depict the Black Hawk's role in anti-drug efforts or as a medi-vac vehicle seem contrived. Also, the author's choice of language when describing enemy forces in places like Grenada is propagandistic. While this book may interest aircraft aficionados, it is limited in its use and appeal. 2001, Enslow, $18.95. Ages 9 to 12. Reviewer: Greg M. Romaneck.
