Overview

Black Hawk was a Sauk Indian leader who refused to leave his lands in Illinois when asked by the U.S. government. The government forced Black Hawk and his people to move to less fertile lands, causing great hardship for the Sauk. When they tried to return to their homelands, the U.S. Army was called in to drive the Sauk out, resulting in violent armed conflict that cost the lives of hundreds of Sauk.
