While the American Revolution was fought as the war that would bring freedom and liberty to America, a great many Americans who fought would not be allowed their freedom. Despite the odds against them, many black men joined the cause and many became heroes of the war. Many African-American men have their actions recorded in this book, yet there were dozens more whose names were lost or never known. This brief narrative chronicles the black Revolutionary War heroes that are recorded in history and includes many of the honors and notations about the respect they received during and after the war. While many back war heroes did receive pensions and rewards, just as many were ignored or had to fight for the rights due them. The text is riveting and helps to underscore the dreadful history that African Americans have had to endure from the very beginning of the history of the United States. Davis has included black-and-white images of portraits, paintings and documents referenced in the text, but the images are rather poor quality and it is sometimes difficult to discern what is being shown.     Black heroes of the american revolution was an alright book. I only read it because I had to do a four page on it.
