Children's Literature - Triss Robinson
This book is part of the "Science Frontiers" series. It explores the many aspects of black holes. Scientists in the 1700s began exploring stars and light, but the term black hole did not appear until the early 1900s. Since then scientists have been able to determine how the black hole is made, its various parts, and the fact that it can be found throughout the universe. The book is beautifully done. The impressive colorful photographs from space give the reader a sense of awe and splendor. They also show the endless expanse of space and the violence that takes place in our ever-changing universe. The format for each page is done in such a way as to break up the page and offer more interesting facts along the bottom or the sides of each page. The information in this book is presented at a higher level. The vocabulary is difficult. The glossary at the back is necessary for the reader's constant clarification. The subject matter is fascinating, but for young to middle readers, the material may be too difficult to understand. For those who are interested in reading more about black holes, several references to web sites are included at the back of the book.
