Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather N. Kolich
Through an abundance of intriguing photographs and illustrations, this title of the "Big Ideas in Science" series leads readers though all things "black hole," including a playful nod to the depiction of this space-time anomaly in science fiction novels and movies. In a chapter on the basics of black holes, Parker explains how Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and Special Theory of Relativity helped predict the existence of black holes long before astronomers detected any evidence of them in space. The next chapters investigate the birth and death of stars, and how the death of a particular star can create a black hole. The paradox of black holes is revealed in a later chapter, which explores the possibility that black holes might give birth to stars. The theories of Karl Schwarzschild, Roy P. Kerr, and Stephen Hawking are explained and compared as subsequent chapters discuss black hole detection, and define and illustrate the different types of black holes, from mini-black holes that evaporate moments after creation to galaxy-gobbling quasars. Parker also includes discussions of the theories and myths of things such as time dilation, the spaghetti effect, white holes, and wormholes. There is an activity for readers to do that helps visualization of time dilation. A glossary, index, and sources for more information complete the book. Reviewer: Heather N. Kolich
