Lyle's black magic has empowered more townspeople to help him execute his Grand Adventure, a plan that will reduce the town, and half the state, to rubble.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Lake Wobegon meets The Omen in this curiously charming horror novel. Mur-derous immortal sorcerer Lyle Miller randomly decides to destroy the sleepy Florida town of Citrus Glade from within. Playing on the loneliness and boredom of a group of lost teenagers and the greed of some small-time thugs, the handsome and charming Miller sets up shop. Soon Citrus Glade is in the path of a hurricane, teeming with possessed wild animals and killer rabbits popping out of hats. It’s up to a city maintenance man, his senile mother, her part-Anamassee friend, a travelling biologist, and some poor but pious farmers to work together to save their town. Somehow James (Sacrifice) manages to make his over-the-top supernatural showdown feel low-key, as if even gory magical murders can’t entirely overcome smalltown inertia. The result is surprisingly touching and compulsively readable. (May)
Library Journal
When Lyle Miller opens a new magic shop in the small Florida town of Citrus Glade, the mayor sees the possibility of revitalization, while the local reverend sees the hand of the Devil at work. For a quartet of boys calling themselves the Outcasts, the magic shop represents potential power and prestige after Miller dubs them his apprentices and gives them "words of power" to use with the magic "tricks" they have bought. Miller's magic is real and dangerous as he uses the boys to supply him with power to put his grand adventure into motion—destroying the town in the process. VERDICT James (Dark Inspiration; Sacrifice) has a talent for combining action-packed vignettes into a powerful, fast-paced whole. Vivid cinematic images make this a quick, gory read for the horror fan.

Can a horror book be scary and touching? I didn't think so, but

Can a horror book be scary and touching? I didn't think so, but this one is. Great characters, chilling scenes, some a bit gruesome. I've really liked every book Russell James has written so far.
