Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
The silvery green black mamba on the cover of this book from the "Fangs" series appears ready to strike. Its gaping mouth is enough to pull young readers into the book in search of something scary and real. Fact boxes sprinkled with tidbits of information and a number of attractive close-up photos make this a page-turner. The kid-friendly format offers text containing eighty-five words of text or less on every two page spread. The reading level is a two and up, but younger children can enjoy the photos and will be able to read part of the controlled text. Readers come away with knowledge that a black mamba is twelve feet long, it slithers along with its head one and a half feet off the ground, and that it is related to king cobras and coral snakes. The twenty-one pages of text are followed by three more containing "Fang Facts," a glossary, and an index, and resources. The book will enhance science lessons in grades K through 3 and has enough information and graphics to attract older readers. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
