A remarkably rare black orchid at a flower show lures Nero Wolfe from his comfortable brownstone. But before the detective and his sidekick, Archie Goodwin, can stop and smell the roses, a diabolically daring murder puts a blight on the proceedings. The murderer to be weeded out is definitely not a garden-variety killer.

Wolfe must also throw his considerable weight into another thorny case, this one involving a rich society widow bedeviled by poison-pen letters -- and a poisonous plot as black as Wolfe's orchids with roots even more twisted.

"Like the orchids he so avidly cultivates, Nero Wolfe is one of mystery writing's most prized ornamentals." (B-O-T Editorial Review Board)

    Scintillating mystery

Black Orchids by Rex Stout contains two cases that concern something close to that famous detective, Nero Wolfe--orchids. These orchids are black, a special strain that had been developed, and Nero Wolfe wants them. He gets the chance when a man is murdered at the flower show, and he makes a deal with the man who owns the black orchids--he'll find the killer, then he gets the orchids. The second story involves a gangster's daughter and imposters. Both these stories rely on Wolfe's charismatic assistant, Archie who always livens things up. It may take a little while to get into the 1940s mindset, but it is well worth it. After reading a couple of Rex Stout's novels, you'll be addicted. The banter is entertaining, the mysteries exciting. With Archie's narration you get the view of how he sees it; he lives with Wolfe and still doesn't understand Nero's mind. Wolfe's idiosyncrasies keep the reader entertained and interested, and although this is a series, very rarely go into lecturing mode; readers can easily understand most of the background story. Reading Rex Stout, especially this book, is a worthwhile experience. His other novels, including the broken vase with Tecumsah Fox, are equally gripping.
