Overview

Is it possible to interfere with history in a moral way, especially if profit is the primary motivation for doing so? Is it possible to sustain any ethical standards at all when handed what amounts to unlimited power? These and other shadowy questions are raised in this book, the unofficial history of Dr. Zeus, Inc.-known to its employees simply as the Company. This collection brings together the early Company stories in one volume for the first time. Also included are new stories, three previously unpublished, and one, "The Queen in Yellow," written exclusively for this book. Sci-fi fans will follow the secret activities of the Company's field agents-once human, now centuries-old time-traveling immortal cyborgs: Botanist Mendoza's search for the rare hallucinogenic Black Elysium grape in 1844 Spanish-held Santa Barbara, California; Facilitator Joseph's dreamlike solicitation of the ailing Robert Louis Stevenson in 1879; Marine Salvage Specialist Kalugin's recovering of an invaluable Eugène Delacroix painting from a sunken yacht off the coast of Los Angeles in 1894; and Literature Preservationist Lewis's retrieval of priceless literary artifacts, in 1914 Egypt, from the mummy case of Princess Sit-Hathor-Yunet.

Author Biography: Kage Baker is the author of In the Garden of Iden, Sky Coyote, Mendoza in Hollywood, and The Graveyard Game. She lives in Pismo Beach, California.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This excellent collection brings together 14 of Baker's short stories about "The Company," three of them unpublished. Select humans have been plucked from various epochs and turned into enhanced, immortal, time-traveling cyborgs, programmed to do the shadowy bidding of the profit-loving Company. Unable to fight their own programming, the best of them try to fulfill the Company's directives while being kind to the mortal "sheep" they live among ("Noble Mold" and "Studio Dick Drowns Near Malibu"). Their jobs and lives are complicated by warring Company factions ("Old Flat Top"), which certain mortals see as heavenly battles ("The Hotel at Harlan's Landing"). Also included are the first four tales about the mysterious, genetically enhanced Alec Checkerfield ("Smart Alec," "The Dust Enclosed Here," "Monster Story" and "The Likely Lad"), as well as two other stories ("The Literary Agent" and "The Wreck of the Gladstone") that obliquely pertain to his origins and influences. Baker shows greater range with these stories than she does in her novels (In the Garden of Eden, etc.), and has more fun with her characters, letting them play at being pirates, dig up mummies or interact with Shakespeare and Robert Louis Stevenson. Though the collection brings up troubling ethical questions about the nature of the author's future history (since Alec is referred to as Adonai, does that mean he is God?), Baker masterfully handles characters and plots. These stories rank among the finest recent work in the field. (Sept.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    The Company mystery deepens!!

Ok, for all of you who read the first four Company books, missed most of Kage Baker's previous Company stories published separately, and are eagerly awaiting(nay, salavating)for book five, here are nearly all the Company tales plus a few new ones. Now, go back and read all the previous ones, fitting the short stories into the gaps for more clues(and more mystery)as to who or what is Dr. Zeus, Inc. and who is really running the show. Including the Alex Chesterfield tales, Baker continues her brillant spin on a past, present, and future with increasing evidence that the various incarnations of Dr. Zeus, Inc(the Company)is more responsible for history as we know it than it will admit. Baker's worlds are, by turns, thought-provoking, grim and laugh-out loud funny, especially the future where PC correctness has ended up with the perfect PC correctness world. And it might be here a lot sooner than Baker predicts, the way things are heading. But the natives are clearly not entirely happy with future world, and the Company's immortal operatives more clearly and mysteriously involved in what's going to happen in the unknown future. The only reason I didn't give this five stars is because I'd previously found and read three of the stories. Read all the stories in a single evening so I want book five of the Company now!!

A must read for 'The Company' fans.

OK, so it's mostly stories that are available elsewhere, and not all of the company stories are here. Still, this is a must have for anyone who enjoys Kage baker's work and especially for those hooked on The Company series. There are a few tidbits that point to interesting possibilities in future Company novels and it's worth it for any stories that you may have missed (If you missed the Smart Alec stories when they were first released this is the place find them, noteworhty reading for any Mendoza fans. If your good at putting clues together you'll know why after reading the intro and first story.) I'm only into the third story and I'm just giddy with the whole thing. My one request is that since this book is mostly made up of older stuff that should mean there won't be a yearlong wait for the next full novel. Please!

I have been waiting for this book since February

I am a big fan of the company books and so far have not been disappointed with this book. These are all short stories, but with many of the same characters we all know from the other company books. I am still reading the book, but my favorite story so far is the second story in the book with Mendoza. It would be nice if Kage Baker could still publish book five in the company series this year and then one book a year after that. She has seven books planned.
