Overview

This book presents the kind of eye-opening insights into the history and culture of race for which Sowell has become famous. As late as the 1940s and 1950s, he argues, poor Southern rednecks were regarded by Northern employers and law enforcement officials as lazy, lawless, and sexually immoral. This pattern was repeated by blacks with whom they shared a subculture in the South. Over the last half century poor whites and most blacks have moved up in class and affluence, but the ghetto remains filled with black rednecks. Their attempt to escape, Sowell shows, is hampered by their white liberal friends who turn dysfunctional black redneck culture into a sacrosanct symbol of racial identity. In addition to Black Rednecks and White Liberals, the book takes on subjects ranging from Are Jews Generic? to The Real History of Slavery.

What People are saying about this

Fred Barnes
"Thomas Sowell is America's foremost public intellectual and for good reason. His work covers almost every subject imaginablerace, economics, Marxism, ethnic groups, immigration patterns, just to name a few. He is persuasive and provocative and always scintillating. I've read all his books and never been even faintly disappointed. Black Rednecks and White Liberals is no exception."
executive editor, The Weekly Standard, and Fox News commentator
Stephan and Abigail Thernstrom
"Tom Sowell is a national treasure, America's most perceptive, productive, and thoughtful commentator on racial and ethnic issues. Black Rednecks and White Liberals is vintage Sowella neat package of six lucid and incisive essays that shed new light on the big questions that he has devoted his intellectual life to confronting and answering. Thomas Sowell is probably my favorite political/economic writer. In my younger, more liberal and naive days I often didn't agree with him, but as I've gotten older and hopefully wiser I realize what a great writer he is, fearless and willing to speak the truth that others won't. I would love to see this book become required reading for all high school students. I think it would help them to understand the contributions of Western civilization, the roles that 'middlemen minorities' have played throught history (and why they are often unfairly discriminated against), and the drivers of past successes and failures of blacks in the US back to the antebellum period. This knowledge, and much else in the book, would help them to understand better the history of various minority cultures, and strengthen them to ignore the self-hating pablum spouted by much of the liberal left and academia. My only complaint is that I hate the title.

This is one of the best books on history that I have ever read. Dr. Sowell is a breath of fresh air amid the stale university academic pedagogy that taints the mind of those who ignore the truth. If I could, I would make this book required reading in every high school and college in America. Bravo, I will be reading the rest of his books. PA shogun

This should be required reading for anyone who lives in the south, or plans on moving/visiting/doing business there. The research is thorough, and he's not afraid to speak the truth, even if it isn't politically correct.

A fine look at the big picture of how culture influences success and failure. Thought provoking throughout. It would be a better world if all politicians understood even some of this material.

This Summer I am reading a book by Dr. Thomas Sowell: Black Rednecks and White Liberals. Dr. Sowell is himself a Black man and traces the roots of misbehavior from early Scotland and Northern England. That is a place my own ancestors came from (escaped). That region of England and Scotland scorned education and book reading. Their manners were deplorable, just as Rednecks act today down home where my renegade relatives prowl about in pickup trucks. Dr. Sowell's thesis claims Blacks in the United States picked up the bad ways of white people down south where they were imported unwillingly. He also stresses how hard work and book study has always helped immigrants of all shades and hue in whatever foreign lands they have removed to. Dr. Sowell cites studies that compare Oriental students with Black students and asserts Black folks are simply hard-down, plain lazy. Hmm. Reminds me of my own childhood days in the hot fields of Georgia pulling a pick-sack half full of cotton and wondering if there was a way out of that land. I found a way out. I joined the Military and went to night school. Eventually I graduated from Syracuse University. At Syracuse I became not one whit smarter but learned to accept people who are smarter than I am. Dr. Sowell sounds a lot like Rush Limbaugh!

This is the most excellent book I have read. This is a great read. Dr. Sowell does an incredible job with over 250 references within the first chapter. This well documented and thought-provoking book will have you turning pages without the slightest idea that hours have passed you by as you read this incredible book.

I saw a recent interview with Tom Sowell on C-Span and I was amazed at his plain language straight talk. Not that easy to come by in this day and age.

I read an excerpt, and it was incredibly well reasoned and well-crafted. This author is reliably excellent. Can't wait!
