Overview

This explosive new book challenges many of the long-prevailing assumptions about blacks, about Jews, about Germans, about slavery, and about education. Plainly written, powerfully reasoned, and backed with a startling array of documented facts, Black Rednecks and White Liberals takes on not only the trendy intellectuals of our times but also such historic interpreters of American life as Alexis de Tocqueville and Frederick Law Olmsted. In a series of long essays, this book presents an in-depth look at key beliefs behind many mistaken and dangerous actions, policies, and trends. It presents eye-opening insights into the historical development of the ghetto culture that is today wrongly seen as a unique black identity--a culture cheered on toward self-destruction by white liberals who consider themselves "friends" of blacks. An essay titled "The Real History of Slavery" presents a jolting re-examination of that tragic institution and the narrow and distorted way it is too often seen today. The reasons for the venomous hatred of Jews, and of other groups like them in countries around the world, are explored in an essay that asks, "Are Jews Generic?" Misconceptions of German history in general, and of the Nazi era in particular, are also re-examined. So too are the inspiring achievements and painful tragedies of black education in the United States. "Black Rednecks and White Liberals" is the capstone of decades of outstanding research and writing on racial and cultural issues by Thomas Sowell.

What People are saying about this

Fred Barnes
"Thomas Sowell is America's foremost public intellectual and for good reason. His work covers almost every subject imaginablerace, economics, Marxism, ethnic groups, immigration patterns, just to name a few. He is persuasive and provocative and always scintillating. I've read all his books and never been even faintly disappointed. Black Rednecks and White Liberals is no exception."

Stephan and Abigail Thernstrom
"Tom Sowell is a national treasure, America's most perceptive, productive, and thoughtful commentator on racial and ethnic issues. Black Rednecks and White Liberals is vintage Sowella neat package of six lucid and incisive essays that shed new light on the big questions that he has devoted his intellectual life to confronting and answering. Knowing that Dr. Sowell is one of my favorite writers, my wife bought me this book. I am certainly glad she did. It is a very compelling and authoritive collection of essays dealing with the history of slavery, rednecks, liberals, Jews, Germans, black education and historical perceptive. In a word...wow! Dr. Sowell has an uncanny knack for writing clear concise language which cuts through the babble that we often encounter. Indeed, if I really want to learn the whole story about a certain event or era, there is simply no better place to learn than from Sowell. I can certainly understand why this was called an explosive book when it was initially printed. And, parts of it made me a little uncomfortable but then in order to learn and grow we must be willing to hear the whole story - the good and the bad - in order to get our minds around a topic. Before writing this review, I read some of the one (1) star and two (2) star reviews. While they were few in number, one of the messages from the collective negative reviews seemed to be centered on the way the south is portrayed along with its redneck culture. As a white man that was born and raised in the south, I can attest that Sowell hit the nail on the head. No only from a historical point but also as the current (albeit limited) situation. I love the south and still live there. So I am not into bashing my culture only willing to accept our flaws so we can continually improve. If you are a reader seeking eye-opening insights, this is the book for you. I hope you find this review helpful. Michael L. Buy the book and read it. If a white conservative writes this book we probably have a racist issue but "the professor" is the man and ably makes his case. This is at least the third of Thomas Sowell's books that I have read cover-to-cover. Sowell's writing style is an excellent complement to other, very fine books attempting to explain and enlighten regarding the liberal mentality. It is written in more the text book style than like our usual conservative writers. In spite of his more formal style, the read is excellent and keeps your attention. As I said, buy or borrow the book and read it, cover-to-cover. Thx.
