Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This informative book on contributions made by black people during Civil War times was written by several people, but edited by Jim Haskins. Twenty-three people are highlighted, from Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Frederick Douglass, to little known ones with the names of Dr. Alexander T. Augusta and Elijah McCoy. They came from all walks of life. Some were teachers and nurses. One was a dressmaker, another an inventor, another a pianist, and one a doctor. But they all had one thing in common. They were working toward the abolishment of slavery, either by protecting runaway slaves, speaking out against slavery, or leading productive lives. This is a good book that recognizes the hard work of black people succeeding in a difficult time. Sidebars accompany the text along with black and white photographs and drawings. A chronology and notes are also included. 2003, John Wiley and Sons, Yannuzzi
