Sixteen-year-old mermaid Abby Carson thought she had her secret under control. Who cares if after "the change" took place, she became so beautiful that all the girls at school hated her. And the boys, well, when they look at her, hate isn't exactly what's going through their minds.
But when Abby witnesses a teenage girl's murder by a preternatural creature off the coast of Cape Cod, her carefully controlled life slips into chaos. Hiding in the water until the killer's gone is a must. Getting spotted by Brian Baker, a boy from school, isn't. Neither is falling in love with him. That definitely wasn't part of the plan.
Combine all this with the mysterious mermaid box Abby receives as a postmortem birthday gift from her dad, and she's pulled even deeper into the world of shades and monsters. Once the full force of Abby's deadly siren powers are revealed, the only one she can hurt more than herself is the boy she loves.

I was very excited to read this story because it was FREE and it had good ratings. But oh my lord it dragged on forever on what seems to be only one freaking point. I cant believe i read as far as i did.. it there was ever such a thing as description overload, this author managed to hit it head on. Im saddened because the story had very,VERY rich and intriguing mermaid greek mythology in the backdrop but it just didnt tie in well. In the end I was annoyed with the every freaking fleeting emotion, detailed to the last gasping breath, of the main character Abby and irritated to death with her love propect's bi-polar feelings towards her ( I like her... No, I lover her! Oh, why do I lover her? No, i dont love her... Yes I love her... Your'e the epitomy of evil! ) *sigh*
Finally, the story led to overdrawn climax that had been building up since very early on, with no subplots. I felt like I was throwing my hands up in the air yelling 'Oh, c'mon!!' at the turn of evrery friggin page. This one of the very few stories I've felt this compelled to speek, dare I say,ill of because i actually liked more than half-way then felt to dissappointed i couldnt finish. Obviously ALOT of people disagree. It is a better read than most free books though, I give the author that much.
Dont hate on my review.

I liked the concept of the book but the writing style did not flow and I found it very hard to continue reading and keep interested in the story.

First the not-good: lots of typos, mostly along the lines of the wrong spelling of a homophone or incorrect apostrophes/contractions. Not as bad as some books I've read, but I thought it was particularly funny in this one, as the author was a high school English teacher.
And the good: I really liked the story, it moved very quickly (it did not seem like 600 pages at all), the premise is interesting (teenage mermaid coming of age and fighting bad guys), and it wasn't overt GOOD versus EVIL. Characters moved around on the spectrum. I do wish the main character had a little more backbone and/or initiative - she seemed to get more helpless as the story went on, but I would still read the next book in the series.

So, I was actually really excited to read this book. The beginning pulled me in and about 200 pages in, I thought that the book was exceptional so far. But then around the 300 page mark, the book started to drag. I found myself wishing that I never started. And then around the 450 page mark, everything started going haywire. Everything was just so disasterous that I found myself dreading each page as it came. The dread wasn't a good-book-sort-of-dread-that-makes-you-want-to-read-more, it was an overwhealming I-don't-want-to-continue sort of dread. But, I continued just because I wanted to see it end. And the nthe ending...COME ON!!! I read the ending about twenty times and I still don't understand what happened. I think that Eleanor took over her body, but it wasn't even that clear. And even if that is the ending, then my reason for finishing the book was in the dumps. I get wanting to have a cliff-hanger, but that was simply ridiculous. I regret reading the book. All I was left with was a wish for those hours thats I wasted on this mediocre at best book. Have a nice day.

The characters are bipolar, they love each other one minute and hate each other the next. After a while it got quite annoying. I didn't feel like the book portrayed any important emotions and i just couldn't relate to the characters in any way whatsoever. I felt it had to little dialouge between the characters and too much description where there wasn't any dialouge. The book seemed like it didn't have any important central theme or lesseon so the book seemed pointless. I did like the story line though which wasn't overused like so many other story lines today.i was dissapointed, because of how aggrivating the book was. I definetly do not reccomend it.i gave it three stars because of the unique-ness of it, but other than that this book was sort of a waste of my time.

A disorganized mess. Unlikeable protagonist. And suffering from a serious lack of proof reading. I thought it was written tolerably well but it needed some more time in the editting room.

It is definitely interesting. The silly spelling and grammar mistakes are really killing me though. It seems to be very well though out and flows rather nicely. Very good read.

It just drags on and on to the point where getting to the end is a relief. The concept is great but what the author actually develops it in to is just plain stupid.

This book took so long to read!!! I just dragged on and on and found myself skipping her thoughts and just read the dialogs. Terrible grammer ( please excuse mine ) for an english teacher. Typos, grammatical errors, punctuation errors, and just plain bad language are found in this book.
The next thing was that this book leaves you hanging there. I finished reading the book just to know what happened in the end and the problem was, THERE WAS NO ENDING!! I hate books like this.WASTE OF TIME! DONT READ! I rather die than read the next books

I loved this book. I sat down on vacation and started reading it, and i didn't want to stop reading it. It combines romance with mythological fantasy, and has many layers to the story. It is guarunteed to keep you reading till the very end. I cannot wait until the second book comes out!

Such a good book! Tells a spine chilling tale of murders, mermaids, and monsters... every sci-fi finatics dream! You will never want to put the book down (even when its pitch black outside and your reading the part where someone dies and every squeak you hear you think its a monster out to get you).

This book has great suspence, and action at every turn. There is forbidden love, that keeps you guessing what will happen until the very end. It is a mermaid book that is not just for girls, but could capture the attention and love of all.

This was an amazing book and i cant wait till the second one but a pice of advice to the author; i know people, including me, wish you would come out withe the book asap but i say take your time so the second book can be even more amazing then the first. Its better to come out with it late and really good than fast and really sucky. Just sayin' but good luck on your second book u already got my buy. ^_^
