Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Studies have shown that babies react to high-contrast art and prefer patterns to color. Hoban has created two board books for babies—Black on White and White on Black. In this new version, the pictures from each book have been printed one to a side in the accordion spreads. Thus, two wordless companion books are brought together. They give dramatic presentation to many of the common elements of a baby's world. On the glossy black pages there are white silhouettes of objects such as a baby bottle, a rubber duck, and a string of beads, while silhouettes of black objects—a bib, a butterfly, keys on a ring—are featured against a white background. Simply the best for babies. This little book is held together with a Velcro snap.

    will interest even a newborn!

Black & White board book is based on the simplicity of objects outlined in black & white that can be easily recognized by babies even in color in their daily surroundings. This is one of those rare books that will interest even a newborn (they reflexively prefer to look at high-contrast edges and patterns, especially black and white patterns).

The accordion-like fold out design of the book makes it a great border for a play area. The book is sturdy enough to stand by itself and entertain the baby during "tummy time", encouraging them to pick up their head and to look up at the pictures.

The size of a closed book is 6 x 6 inches. The cover closes with a handy Velcro patch to keep the book from unfolding. When opened, the book is 51 inches long. One side features 8 objects in white with a black background: a baby bottle, a balloon, a chair, buttons, a bird, a flower, a banana, and a sailboat. The other side has 6 objects in black with a white background: a fork and a spoon, a baby bib, a butterfly, a leaf, keys, and a cat. It's like having 2 books in 1 (instead of purchasing both "White on Black" and "Black on White" by Tana Hoban)!

    I Also Recommend:

BEST baby book EVER! (suggested by school librarian)

I LOVE this baby book and every new mom whom I gift this book to at a baby shower LOVES this book because their babies love it. My niece loved this book when she was an infant too. This book is great because it is simply black and white (appropriate for infants) and double-sided. It can stand up accordian-style so a baby can play with it on his/her own during tummy time. Other black and white books by Tana Hoban are appropriate, too, but it is the accordian-style of this book that sets it apart from the others. This book seems to be a combination of Hoban's other titles -- White on Black and Black on White. A great purchase.
